Gathering Barn. cooking and dining area

General

  • Spacious site on a working dairy farm near Chipping Sodbury
  • Less than a mile from the Cotswold Way walking trail
  • Large communal barn with kitchen area, games and cosy seating

What a spot for a campfire. Cracking open a bottle of something or other and poking a marshmallow (or bag thereof) in the crackling embers as the sun sets over the surrounding countryside – sounds like an excellent way to spend an evening...

The team at Cotswold Meadow Camping are clearly in agreement, as they’ve added firepits for guests to use, and sell firewood to save you lugging your own up here. Outdoor seating and barbies are also on site, for grownups' food prep while kids charge around the open space playing games or flying kites.

If there's a drizzly day, shift your party to the gathering barn, a cosy space lit with fairy lights and stocked with board games and cards to play after you’ve cooked up your dinner in the communal kitchen. The generous folk here have even chucked in free tea and coffee for a warming cuppa whenever you want.

Alternatively, you may prefer to retreat to the pub – there are seven (one for every day of a week-long stay?) in nearby Chipping Sodbury, 10 minutes’ drive away, and several dotted around the local countryside that also make top sipping stops while you’re trotting along the nearby Cotswold Way.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Dogs must be tethered at all times due to livestock in adjoining fields.

Lovely flat field with beautiful countryside around.
Good hot water and clean facilities. The barn with cooking facilities and fridge etc was great as it meant you don’t have to pack your entire kitchen! You can also borrow fire pits and barbecues free of charge.
An easy walk down into Chipping Sodbury where we bought supplies in Waitrose. Plenty of pubs which we did not have time to visit!

    Disliked:

Thought we were going the wrong way travelling down a narrow lane. I don’t think we would have found without google maps.

A really nice site, in a lovely quiet area, and cows to greet you in the morning. The facilities were very clean and the friendly owner was regularly seen cleaning and tidying around the site. The pitches were well kept and spacious. There is also a pub within 25 mins walking distance! Excellent location for visiting Bath and Bristol too, about 30 mins drive to each.

The ambiance on the site, view of hot air balloons and open fields, proximity to town and country walks, the cows visiting the adjacent field in the morning. The club house had so many cooking facilities, glasses, pots and pans. Our first stay in a bell tent was fabulous.

Peaceful campsite where you fall asleep to the gentle moo-ing and baa-ing of the surrounding farm animals. Sheltered area with cookers and fridge/freezer facilities, and immaculately clean toilets and showers. Great place if you want to switch off from the outside world, with plenty of places to walk and shop within driving distance. Lizzie is very welcoming and available for questions or chats! Highly recommend.

This was an excellent site and very well run by Lizzie who was warm, welcoming, helpful and friendly. The tents were so lovely and the beds warm and cosy. It was the little finishing touches like fairy lights, tissues and hot water bottles in the tents that just made it stand out from the rest.
The shower and toilet facilities were excellent and immaculately clean and the addition of the open barn with fridges, cooking facilities, games and all of the things you need to make for an easy experience were excellent.
We made use of the fire pits and wood and Lizzie advised us on what to do to get our fire going and we of course had the obligatory marshmallows.
We sat outside under the stars on the first night and on the second when it was rainy and cloudy we were tucked up warm and cosy in our tent.
A great experience and one we will be repeating.

This wasn’t the owners fault at all and and she was very sweet about it, but my battery pack and multi charger disappeared from the communal charging areas.

This is an excellent campsite with lovely flat grass pitches and soft ground for tent pegs. The communal provisions are a brilliant addition - all those little things that you forgot to pack are available. Cleaning standards are very high. The central grassy area is spacious and perfect for games, and evening campfires. The atmosphere is relaxed, the scenery is beautiful - all in all the perfect camping break.

Everything! Facilities were excellent, we used both a BBQ and a fire pit, the washing up facilities and bathrooms and showers were clean, tidy and well stocked. We had lovely weather so didn't use the seating area in the barn but was great to know it was there in case we needed it. Also loved the hot outdoor shower!
The campsite felt rural but there were pubs within walking distance. Lizzie was really friendly and helpful and always around and checking in with everyone. The campsite had a great feel and we would definitely return!

Local attractions

Not only is this a gorgeous spot, it’s also a strategic location to settle in for activities and attractions. For starters, the 100-mile Cotswold Way passes less than a mile away; there are plenty of circular walks locally too if you don’t fancy the long-distance ramble.

Also good for a wander are the area’s historic houses – National Trust properties Newark Park, Dyrham Park and Prior Park are all within a half-hour drive, as is Berkeley Castle, home to the same family for 900 years. Or take the 20-minute drive to Westonbirt Arboretum to roam among the 15,000 trees (don’t miss the ace views from the treetop walkway).

Bristol (half an hour’s drive) and Bath (40 minutes) are stuffed full of attractions for all ages, and the Cattle Country Adventure Park, half an hour away, is a great destination for those with kids in tow.

Must see

  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (7.8 miles)
  • Number One Royal Crescent (10.7 miles)
  • Assembly Rooms (10.8 miles)

National Trust

  • Horton Court (1.8 miles)
