  • Cotswolds wild camping with spectacular Stroud and Severn Vale views
  • National Arboretum a 25-minute drive; 15 minutes to the Cotswold Way
  • No-frills site; pubs, farmers’ market and shops 20 minutes’ walk away
With views over the Severn Vale towards the Forest of Dean, Stan’s Field has a handful of pitches scattered over an extensive field with some flat areas and some slopes. It’s a west-facing site on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment, looking towards the Brecon Beacons and with amazing sunsets – so basically, the higher you go, the better the view – but the higher you go, the more the field slopes… This is true wild camping, with very basic facilities comprising a compost loo and a washing-up sink with cold water – but the joy of this place is that there’s plenty of wildlife to spot if you’re lucky and move around quietly on site – badgers, deer and foxes may all make their appearance and you might get to see some glow worms too. The site owner will pick you up from public transport, or it’s a 25-minute walk from Stroud railway station. If you’re going down the self-catering route, pick up deli goodies for the barbecue from Stroud Farmers’ Market (15 minutes’ walk) on Saturday morning, or pick up basics from the handy supermarket (20 minutes). On the other hand, if you’d rather have a change of scenery, it’s only 10 minutes’ walk to two real-ale pubs (with occasional live music).

Local attractions

Hikers, this place is close to the long-distance Cotswold Way (15 minutes’ drive) between Bath and Chipping Campden, as well as scores of great walks around the Stroud valleys. Yomp up to Painswick Beacon (also 15 minutes) for Gloucestershire views, or follow the W.A.S Way (10 minutes) circular route around Stroud itself. Mixing walks up with a bit of culture, have an amble around the Slad valley (15 minutes), the setting for Laurie Lee’s “Cider with Rosie”, where you can spot his old house, school and favourite pub. You can also have a wander through the grounds of the unfinished, Victorian-era Woodchester Mansion Trust (20 minutes) before scaring yourself silly with guided tours of its ghostly towers and vaulted hallways. If gardening is your thing, you’ve got lucky here. You can get lost along spooky forest trails dotted with follies at Painswick Rococo Garden (20 minutes), mug up on rare trees as you follow woodland walks at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (25 minutes), and even have a poke around Prince Charles’s shrubberies at Highgrove Gardens (20 minutes).

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Amazing views across Stroud to the Bristol Channel and beyond (see photo). Great to watch the sun go down! Beautifully quiet. Very close to nature. Facilities though basic were quite adequate and as described.

Disliked: A kind of map of / instructions for the site would be helpful I think - when I arrived the main 3 pitches had been taken, and it wasn't obvious (to me) that the wider "walkway" that had clearly been mowed was actually a place where I could pitch.
The site is not staffed and the other campers didn't really know either! Fortunately the person collecting money found me as I was pitching in the wrong place and put me right!

Also I did find it pretty hard to find the site, and Sat Nav is quite patchy in this beautifully off-the-beaten-track site. Maybe add a few more tips to finding it on the site description?
