  • Dog-friendly farm-based site with views over the Malvern Hills
  • A 15-minute drive to the river Wye; 25 minutes to the Forest of Dean
  • Firepits and barbecues welcome; village shop 25 minutes’ walk away
Hands up if you’re on the hunt for a rural site with views for miles and within driving distance of the river Wye, the Malvern Hills and the Forest of Dean. Camping at Gleneith is a very fine option… On a working farm in Herefordshire, this small-scale pop-up site ticks a lot of boxes. Firstly, there’s spectacular rural scenery and laidback countryside vibes. Secondly, it’s 10 minutes’ drive from the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 15 minutes from the river Wye and 25 minutes from the Forest of Dean - what a location. The spacious grassy farm field has a simple set of facilities, including portable toilets. That makes it well-suited to self-sustaining folk who will jump at the chance to build a campfire or sizzle their dins over a barbecue. The views over the hills and the farmlands more than make up for the absence of mod cons. It’s very family-friendly here too. Kids can count the livestock in the neighbouring fields. The complete family is welcome; that includes well-behaved dogs (on leads, please) who want to join in with the action too. A 10-minute drive away is the small town of Newent, where there are direct buses to Gloucester and Cheltenham and a local leisure centre. The local village has a shop and post office 25 minutes’ walk away (go on, make the folk back home jealous with a postcard). As for shops, supermarkets, cafés and another post office, Ross-on-Wye is15 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Oh, to be kayaking or canoeing with thick foliage and grass verges on either side. The Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes’ drive) has a watersports centre and cycling and hiking trails for those who’d like to stay on dry land. Cycles on your mind? There are bicycles available to rent from the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre (25 minutes). Hiking? Try the gorgeous Coppett Hill (25 minutes), which has views over the Wye Valley, or one of the many hikes in the Malvern Hills, which includes the scenic (and historic) British Camp Hill Fort (25 minutes). If you fancy switching things up a bit and heading into the city, Gloucester (half an hour) has an 11th-century cathedral, historic Victorian docks and, of course, plenty of typical city entertainment like shopping.
