  • Relaxed, family-friendly campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Chepstow
  • Wye Valley National Landscape 15 minutes’ drive; Tintern 20 minutes
  • Communal kitchen and games room; pub in Woolaston 20 minutes’ walk
Halfway between historic Chepstow and seaside Lydney (both 10 minutes’ drive) in Gloucestershire, family-friendly Sheephouse Campsite is handily located for forays into the Forest of Dean and expeditions to gorgeous Tintern Abbey (both 20 minutes). Everything about this laidback site is designed to make life easy for you. There are no firm arrival or departure times, and no set pitches on the more-or-less level camping field – which has views over to the River Severn, by the way – so family groups and friends can pitch up together. Your younger offspring can busy themselves on the climbing frame and slide, while teens may well head straight to the games room with table-tennis and pool tables, as well as a chillout area for hanging out with new pals and USB charging points for your devices. The simple shared kitchen has a washing-up sink, freezer, kettle and a table and chairs for eating if the weather is not up to alfresco dining. Woolaston (five minutes’ drive/20 minutes’ walk) has a couple of farm shops for picking up bits to barbecue (bring your own barbecue), or you could abandon the car and stroll down to the pub, which does a good line in curries, served both in-house and as takeaways.

Naomi A. 1 review

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Easy to find, lovely owners, pitching field was fine for you 4x4m bell tent and medium size car, we had plenty of space. Facilities (kitchen, toilets, water) were clean and tidy at all times, thye mostly fine but per the reviews, the showers weren't great.
Like others said, is along a busy A road, but made no difference to us! Lots to do around (visiting the Clearwater caves or the open air pool is a must on a 32degree day!)
Car boot sale on sunny Sundays, just over the fence, again, no issue for us! Will most certainly be back with the kids who will take us to the games room, we didn't have chance this trip!

Disliked Only problem was the shower, but I read reviews before so knew what to expect RE set temperature and push button only works for a split second meaning you need to lean on button constantly. The problem I had was the lady before me said 1 of the 2 showers wasn't working, and when I kept the button pushed in, the water went to a trickle and eventually stopped. Wasn't an issue for me, for 1 night where I didn't need to wash my hair!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great site and highly recommended. Good value for money. Good toilet and shower facilities. Games room on site and playground for the kids. Electric points available in the kitchen for coffees or pot noodles, etc. Very well presented. We are regulars and will return.

Disliked Quite near the main road so can hear traffic at all hours, however this didn’t bother us.

Local attractions

Cyclists have easy access to the Wye Valley Greenway (20 minutes by bike), or you can up the physical ante with climbing and abseiling at waterside Symonds Yat (35 minutes). Hikers should grab their boots and head off into the Wye Valley National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) to follow sections of the scenic Wye Valley Walk along the river banks. Kids unwilling to walk? Tempt them with colourful art installations on the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (25 minutes), or let them have a run around in the moss-covered undergrowth at Puzzlewood (15 minutes). If little legs tire, you can all hop aboard the Forest of Dean Railway (10 minutes) to chug through the woodland by heritage train. Clearwell Caves (15 minutes) will also intrigue most children with its network of underground caverns once mined for iron ore; today a self-guided tour leads to an illuminated and ice-cold subterranean lake. Learn more about local heritage with a visit to spectacular Tintern Abbey (20 minutes), with its photogenic setting by the River Wye, or take a look around medieval Chepstow Castle (10 minutes) on its craggy hilltop.
