  • Relaxed, family-friendly campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Chepstow
  • Puzzlewood 15 minutes’ drive; Tintern Abbey 20 minutes
  • Covered communal kitchen and games room; village pub 20 minutes’ walk
Halfway between ancient Chepstow and seaside Lydney (both 10 minutes’ drive) in Gloucestershire, family-friendly Sheephouse Campsite is handily located for forays into the Forest of Dean and expeditions to gorgeous Tintern Abbey (both 20 minutes). Everything about this laid-back site is designed to make life easy for you. There are no firm arrival or departure times, and no set pitches on the nicely level camping field – which has views over to the River Severn, by the way – so family groups and friends can pitch up together. A basic shared kitchen has a washing-up sink, a freezer, electric kettle and a table and chairs for eating if the weather is not up to alfresco dining. Your younger offspring can busy themselves on the climbing frame and slide, while teens may well head straight to the games room with table-tennis and pool tables, as well as a sofa and chairs for hanging out with new-found pals. That’s also where you can find USB charging points for all your devices. Woolaston (five minutes) has a couple of farm shops for picking up bits to barbecue, or you could abandon the car and stroll down to the village pub (20 minutes’ walk), which does a good line in curries and seafood.

Primitive grass RV campsite (maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Friendly and informative hosts. Very reasonably priced. The place, space and facilities were fab. Location was great. Easy access to car boot sale on the Sunday. We also loved watching the small plane coming in to land in the next field, great for the kids.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike. The site is near a busy road which you can hear but it’s not overly loud, whilst this didn’t bother us I can imagine it might not be suited to everyone.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Sparkling clean facilities Games room with ping pong and pool plus a sofa and plenty of plugs Washing up sponges and liquid supplied Nice view of the river Great for younger kids

Disliked: Busy road runs past the site, quite noisy at night No shops or cafes within an easy walking distance

From the manager: Hi, thank you for your review. We do like the little touches that help make our campers holiday a bit easier. The Games Room is certainly a big hit with adults and children. We also like it that we are a bit isolated from the shops, although there is a shop in the Village and a nice cafe down the road.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great location, clean facilities, friendly staff. We enjoyed the games room and the kitchen with electric kettle which made that first cuppa in the morning nice and easy!

Disliked: There is a bit of road noise. Also, the weekend car boot sale on the field next door is a bit close.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, thank you for your review. We know the road noise is sometimes a bit bad, but hope the other, good things, about the campsite outweigh it.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely friendly owners who were around if needed Showers, toilets and washing up room always clean (and very soft toilet paper!) Family friendly with games room and slide, plus added entertainment of light aircraft taking off and a car boot sale! The site was really calm and everyone observed the quiet after sundown rule so great for young children. Located close to loads of things to do-Chepstow, Tintern, Forest of Dean, Caldicot..

Disliked: Very close to a main road, so can be quite as bit of traffic noise. Showers need the button pressing every 4 seconds!!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, thank you so much for you lovely review. We are sorry that you struggled with the showers. The timer on them must have tightened a bit. We have now adjusted them so they last longer.

Great location, clean facilities, welcoming staff, definitely revisit

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Ideal location with activities to do within 5 miles of campsite. Hosts were polite and really helpful and always cleaning toilets/shower blocks and shared kitchen which also provided tea, coffee and cleaning equipment. Site was clean and rubbish well sorted. Little airstrip with plane taking of next to it was good for the kids to watch as well as pool and table tennis available. And of course kids favourite thing in the world..... WiFi, which can be reached at the furthest end of site. Overall

Disliked: Honestly nothing. Only thing I would say is watch the turn in part as a little steep.
