  • No-frills site a five-minute drive from the market town of Berkeley
  • William Tyndale Monument 10 minutes’ drive; Gloucester half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; spectacular views as far as Nibley Knoll
Surrounded by cultivated fields and open countryside, Cockshut Meadow Orchard is a pop-up site on the western fringes of the Cotswolds National Landscape. It welcomes families who are not afraid to embrace a bit of a ‘back-to-basics’ experience. How basic, you ask? Well, there are portable toilets on site, but no showers or washing-up facilities. However, your dog is a welcome guest here (always a bonus, right? And there are plenty of dog-friendly walks in the vicinity, starting from the little lane adjacent to the site); it is blissfully peaceful without being entirely cut off from civilisation (the market town of Berkeley – with its shops and dining options – is a five-minute drive away); and there are splendid views across the meadows all the way towards Nibley Knoll, on top of which stands the William Tyndale Monument (10 minutes’ drive). Climb the 120 steps to the summit for spectacular views of the Severn Valley and the Black Mountains of Wales. It’s a 10-minute drive to the Berkeley Pill, a tidal stream close to the Severn, where there are more trails; or you can head to the Saul Canal Junction, with a pretty marina off the Stroudwater Navigation canal.
