  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest
Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails. As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake. Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space for ball games and dog walking. Guests here can hire firepits (including wood) from the site. Off-ground barbecues are also welcome: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

What customers say

Greenacres Campsite earns praise for its prime Forest of Dean location with direct access to stunning hikes. Guests rave about the spotless, modern facilities and warm showers. Friendly staff, the on-site shop, and cafe are big pluses. Spacious, level pitches are standard. Minor points: the access road, occasional Wi-Fi issues, and a play area needing upgrades. Highly recommended for its tranquility and value.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Cleanliness and tidiness of this campsite was outstanding. Such a nice place to be. Great, friendly customer service and communication from the moment of booking. Very well maintained facilities. Easy access to the path leading the town (20min walk) and also to the woods and the Wye Valley. Electric hook ups with app monitoring and payment were brilliant and fairly priced.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Nice quiet site, facilities nice and clean. Only stayed overnight so we didn't use them much, owner was friendly and helpful (despite me misreading the pitch number and me pitching in the wrong place!!). Short drive to Monmouth which was lovely

Power optional grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Good location to access Wye Valley and the forest. Liked the hot showers & love the food waste bins next to the washing up sinks!

Disliked The owner came round both nights and made us feel incredibly uncomfortable. He was 'joking' about making sure not to scorch the grass. You *cannot* bring your own fire pit to this site (which is not specified on pitch up or their website at time of writing - we suggested they update), have you hire there's (very reasonable charge only £11). He lingered and looked in our tent, pointed at each of us to warm us about scorching the grass, and also 'joked' that his wife wasn't ever there because she was breaking into campers houses and waiting at the end of their beds. So strange. Also very unreasonable to joke about breaking into campers houses when he has all of our addresses from our bookings. Really creepy guy we left a day early.

Power optional gravel campsite

Liked Very good size pitches, plenty of space. Clean showers with hot water, area for laundry, we didn't use it, but there were people using the washing machine. 3 sinks with very hot water to do the dishes which we found awesome. The amenities are cleaned daily at 11 am.
Very quiet area and very cared about.

Disliked There is nothing we dislike, we will be back.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Friendly, welcoming staff. Nice site, clean shower block and toilets. Washing up facilities were good. Asked to be close to toilet and was given pitch 12 which was real close to a block of 2 loos in the field which were spotlessly clean.

Disliked Optional electric - we were placed on pitch 12 - The electric hook up was covered over and out of use and the closest was too far for us to reach. This didn’t affect our stay and we didn’t raise it as we were happy with the pitch given and have solar panels so just run off of that. The only downfall - place was nice

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely comments about the site and facilities, we’re really pleased you enjoyed your stay and that the pitch location worked well for you.

I’m very sorry about the issue with the electric hook-up on pitch 12. That was our mistake, and we should have made sure you were placed on an electric pitch. We completely take responsibility for that and appreciate you being so understanding and managing with your solar setup. We’ll make sure this is picked up with the team so it doesn’t happen again.

Thank you again for your kind feedback, and we do hope to welcome you back for a fully spot-on stay next time.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away. Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site. Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
