  • Peaceful Peak District site two miles from Bamford Edge
  • A 10-minute drive to caverns; 25 minutes from Bakewell and Chatsworth
  • Children’s playground opposite; the Thornhill Trail and pub close by
Pretty is what you get at Hope Valley Campsite in the Peak District National Park. It’s pretty in the way of scenery… but also pretty darn peaceful, as the site rolls out over six acres and looks over a valley and the river Derwent. It’s also two miles from Bamford Edge (which, by the way, is half an hour’s walk away when you fancy an uphill hike above a reservoir). Surrounded by the national park’s slopes but flat around the site, things are quite simple here in the way of facilities. There’s a water supply and portable toilet, and opposite the site are a playground and some space to get some games going next to the river. There’s good access to the road when you’re ready to set off somewhere just as nice. When you’re going on foot, the Thornhill Trail might attract your attention. It starts near the site and leads the way to Ladybower Reservoir in around 40 minutes. Pubs are pretty plentiful around this area too. You might like to stop off at the pub down in Bamford (it’s just a ten-minute walk away) or head into Castleton, where there are a larger handful of pubs 10 minutes’ drive away. Don’t worry about searching far and wide for food supplies, as there’s a farm shop and a small food shop five minutes’ drive away from the site too.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Open field, portaloos clean, nice scenery if you’re facing the right way, Owner seemed pleasant, other campers respected the rules of no music and it being a quiet site.

Disliked No washing up facilities, No fresh running water - the water comes from a sterile tank. We didn’t fancy drinking this as it is stood in the sun all day. Although all the other campers seemed to use it so it’s just our personal preference.

From the manager: We advertise as what we are a basic campsite with portaloos and drinking water which am exactly what we are the water is spring water the water we drink and the tank is changed regularly.20 an night for two adults and two kids I would say is value for money .your score for accommodation is also low maybe invest in a new tent you provide your own accommodation if you want a haven holiday park you’ve co r to the wrong place we are a field in the beautiful Peak District with scent idea and lovely walks

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Liked the space in the field with access to plenty of walks and cycle tracks. The owner greeted us on arrival and explained where everything was and popped round later on to see if everything was okay and gave us ideas of where we could explore.

Disliked Nothing to dislike as it was perfect for what we wanted to do

Local attractions

An afternoon by the lido? It’s only a five minutes’ drive to reach such a place from Hope Valley Campsite. Add five to 10 minutes onto your journey time and you could be on an underground boat trip at Speedwell Cavern (10 minutes) or taking a tour around the slate, stalagmites and stalactites at Blue John Cavern (15 minutes). For a little stroll and some fur (or in the alpacas’ case, wool) therapy, Mayfield Alpacas Animal Park (15 minutes) may be your next stop – the animal park has skunks, meerkats and other creatures too. As for those staple activities associated with the Peak District, a cycle down the disused railway on the Monsal Trail (20 minutes) is nicely followed by a brew and Bakewell pudding along the riverbank and medieval bridge in Bakewell (25 minutes). There’s a stepping stones walk at Chee Dale (half an hour) or the huge grounds at Chatsworth House (25 minutes) when you’re in need of more wanderings (or time with the playgrounds and farmyard animals, in the case of the latter). Buxton (half an hour), a thermal spa town, is equal parts peaceful and historic, with a heritage trail you may want to follow instead.
