  • Spacious and peaceful Derbyshire site 10 minutes' drive from Matlock
  • Just outside Peak District National Park; Chatsworth 20 minutes' drive
  • Next door to a popular farm park, with discount entry for guests
Getting close to wildlife is one of the great reasons to go camping – but you may not expect your Derbyshire stay to include meetings with things like meerkats, emus and wallabies… That line-up, however, is what awaits for guests at Matlock Farm Park Camping, a friendly site just outside the Peak District National Park about 10 minutes’ drive from Matlock. Of course, you won’t actually be staying right there among the animals – they live next door at the farm park, which offers a 20% discount to campsite guests so that they can join in with animal feeding and pony rides or use the go karts and indoor/outdoor playgrounds. A café and shop are available at the farm park to keep you going while you’re in there; for other meals, you’re allowed to bring along a barbecue (pick up supplies at the farm shop five minutes’ drive away, or Matlock’s shops) and there are several pubs and restaurants in Matlock too. Pitches here are spacious (at least 7 metres x 7 metres) and peaceful, with lovely views of the surrounding scenery. Guests have access to drinking water, charging facilities and toilets, but please note there are no showers on site. When you’re not cooing over cute animals next door, there are plenty more ways to fill your days nearby, including trips to the gorgeous Chatsworth estate, cable car rides at Heights of Abraham and all sorts of walks and activities in the Peak District. You can also take forest walks just outside the site, or save some energy for evening time – dark skies around here mean that you may want to stay awake to see the splendid stars overhead.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely quiet location. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Very impressed. Keeping the grass short, gardener was there when we were there. Is an option of breakfast which I thought was a lovely idea, we didn’t use it though.

Disliked: On the website it said take rubbish home with you. We were very glad there was a bin to use as I think this would have put me off coming.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The staff were really welcoming on arrival, and showed us where the field was. Our stay was incredibly peaceful, and the scenery was beautiful. The field was quiet, and level with portaloo's and a water supply.

Disliked: It was cold and some of the other campers left the toilets in a state. I would recommend bringing Thermals for the night, since the altitude means colder nights. And perhaps the toilets could be cleaned twice a week instead of once a week, or add a notice to campers that they should look after the loos. And there are plans to put in a proper toilet and shower block. None of this is the fault of the owners, and the cold was worth it for the beautiful night sky we saw.

Local attractions

The extensive estate at Chatsworth (20 minutes’ drive) has lots to do, so you can easily make a day of it, splitting your hours between house tours, garden walks and time spent at the adventure playground and farmyard. Something similar could be said of Gulliver’s Kingdom (15 minutes), which has enough rides, playgrounds and themed areas to keep you going all day long. If you’d rather stick to natural attractions, there are plenty of those in the Peak District National Park – perhaps you’d like to see some of the scenery on a bike ride along the traffic-free Tissington Trail from Ashbourne or while jumping across the Dovedale stepping stones (both 35 minutes). Brave souls may like to see the scenery from above on a cable car ride at Heights of Abraham (15 minutes), which has a hilltop park with caverns to explore. Back down at ground level, you can instead ride on historic vehicles at Crich Tramway Village (15 minutes).
