  • Wild camping site a five-minute drive from Tideswell, Derbyshire
  • Peak District 15 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth House 20 minutes
  • Quiet adults-only pitches; pubs within half-hour walk
If you've been spending too much time stressing in front of a computer, you might well be in need of a break from all modern trappings. Cue Stanley Lodge Farm, a tiny wild-camping site on a family smallholding in the Derbyshire countryside, a five-minute drive from the village of Tideswell. What makes this spot so suited to anyone in need of rest and relaxation? Well, it’s an adults-only site, for starters, which means zero chance of being stirred from your slumber by screaming children. Dogs are not allowed, either, so no barking wake-up calls; and guests are kindly requested not to play loud music. These are all pretty good credentials for a peaceful break, you’ll no doubt agree… A path runs right past the site, so you can explore the immediate surroundings on foot, perhaps heading to Eyam (about one hour’s walk), a small village with a museum, a craft centre and a sculpture garden. There are a couple of pubs within a half-hour walk, in case you get parched on your hike. And of course, you’re right on the edge of Peak District National Park (15 minutes’ drive) with its hills, caverns and reservoirs. There is a unisex portable toilet on site and a drinking water tap, but not much else. Well, there are resident horses, but please resist the temptation to share your carrots with them – they are not to be fed.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely peaceful and welcoming campsite. Katie was really helpful and friendly. Really enjoyed my stay and would recommend for some quiet time. There is some distant noise from the main road but is quiet at night. Had a much needed restful break here.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Friendly owner. Good access to Cressbrookdale, Eyam and surrounding White Peak villages. Quiet site. Open views. Clean toilet facilities with amazing mushrooms.

Disliked: Busy, noisy and illuminated nearby A623. Small and narrow field. Sloping site. Long grass (lost pegs). No waste facilities. Toilet mushrooms.

From the manager: The site is a wild camp site with what amenities it has advertised, nothing less, nothing more. Conflicting review of likes and dislikes, but would like to point out that mushrooms do grow in the field and certainly not in the portaloo. The grass is always mown weekly, but what with the weather it has been unfit to do so, and now I have the hazard of finding tent pegs, which if you’d asked for help with removing them could have been achieved.

Excellent small field with a portaloo

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The loo was very clean. The grounds were drained really well even after all of the rain. Perfect for wild camping. Loved to hear the sheep in the next field. Very relaxing and beautiful scenery. Access to path leading to Eyam.

Disliked: You can hear the A road close by, but you switch off from it after a while.
