Rural views all round
Plenty of space

  • Peaceful family-friendly site with views over Lathkill Dale
  • A 10-minute drive from the tearooms of Bakewell
  • Easy access to walking routes through the Peak District National Park
Take a peek at the fab Peak District views from the pitches at Mandale Campsite… whichever spot you pick as your territory, the outlook over the national park is painted in various shades of rural green – all fields, woods and perhaps the occasional farm. And just beyond the site’s fences is gorgeous Lathkill Dale, a fave spot for for hikers and birdwatchers. Peace, quiet and open air are in ample supply here – with heaps of space in the fields there’s no need to be living cheek by jowl with your neighbours. Passing school groups of Duke of Edinburgh’s expeditions are welcomed and housed in a separate field to avoid any friction between teenage antics and chilled family soirées. This is a particularly tempting location for sweet-toothed visitors, with the nearest town being Bakewell, home to famed desserts: debate continues among local and visitors as to which is the most scrumptious between Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding, so clearly the only solution is for the individual to conduct their own scientific test by sampling both. The town’s tearooms can provide you with excellent examples, and there are plenty of pubs and restaurants around too. Feeding options closer to home include the country pubs in Over Haddon and Monyash, each less than a 10-minute drive away (there’s a little play area in Monyash too, if you’ve got energetic kids in tow). If the desire to create fire grabs you, you’re also welcome to light up a disposable barbie to grill a few bangers.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Great location for lots of good walks. There are two spacious camping fields, although the first is on a bit of a slope. You can pick where you want to pitch up if you're in a tent. There's a toilet block with proper toilets, a washing up room with a fridge-freezer and also showers (which I didn't use as I only stayed for one night).

Disliked Not the site owners' fault but there were some campers there who didn't take any notice of the "quiet after 10pm" rule. At midnight I had to go and ask 2 lads to turn their music off, and there was a large group - with 4 cars and tents - who were also still up at that time, although they weren't as loud.
Also - again not the owners' fault - there were loads of wasps! They'd been buzzing around in the evening and when I woke up with about 6 in my tent I decided I'd had enough so didn't stay for the second night I'd booked for.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Lovely peaceful site with beatiful views. The fridge and freezer were an unexpected bonus and there was enough room for everyone at the time. Lovely owner who walked to the site and chatted to campers. The showers were good and used either 20p or £1. On average my shower used 60p so not bad. The end shower on the right had plenty of hooks to hang clothes on and the first cubical on the left had a small hook. There is also a plug socket in the ladies toilets for charging your phone etc. I found this out too late!

Disliked The middle showers had nowhere to hang towels or clothes and all the cubicals need somewhere to put toiletries. You had to put toiletries on the dirty floor which is not ideal. The facilities could be cleaner,

Local attractions

Eating as much Bakewell pudding as you like is perfectly acceptable because of the abundance of hiking trails on which to burn off the calories (that’s your excuse and you’re sticking to it). The limestone valley of Lathkill Dale, just outside the site, is a very fine place for a walk and has some excellent birdwatching to be done along the way. Further walks await all over the Peak District National Park for all abilities. The relatively gentle paths of Mam Tor and the Ladybower Reservoir are about 40 minutes’ drive away; keen hikers in search of a challenge should aim for Kinder Scout, 50 minutes’ drive away, to climb up to the highest point in the park. A popular option for families (on foot or by bike) is the Monsal Trail (20 minutes' drive), meandering through nature reserves and underground tunnels to finish near Bakewell (for a restorative pudding perchance?). For a spot of history (or to shelter on a damp day), head to Chatsworth, a splendid estate on the banks of the Derwent river half an hour away.
