Grass pitches and views
Grass pitches
Rural views all round
Plenty of space

  • Peaceful family-friendly site with views over Lathkill Dale
  • A 10-minute drive from the tearooms of Bakewell
  • Easy access to walking routes through the Peak District National Park
Take a peek at the fab Peak District views from the pitches at Mandale Campsite… whichever spot you pick as your territory, the outlook over the national park is painted in various shades of rural green – all fields, woods and perhaps the occasional farm. And just beyond the site’s fences is gorgeous Lathkill Dale, a fave spot for for hikers and birdwatchers. Peace, quiet and open air are in ample supply here – with heaps of space in the fields there’s no need to be living cheek by jowl with your neighbours. Passing school groups of Duke of Edinburgh’s expeditions are welcomed and housed in a separate field to avoid any friction between teenage antics and chilled family soirées. This is a particularly tempting location for sweet-toothed visitors, with the nearest town being Bakewell, home to famed desserts: debate continues among local and visitors as to which is the most scrumptious between Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding, so clearly the only solution is for the individual to conduct their own scientific test by sampling both. The town’s tearooms can provide you with excellent examples, and there are plenty of pubs and restaurants around too. Feeding options closer to home include the country pubs in Over Haddon and Monyash, each less than a 10-minute drive away (there’s a little play area in Monyash too, if you’ve got energetic kids in tow). If the desire to create fire grabs you, you’re also welcome to light up a disposable barbie to grill a few bangers.

Spacious, peaceful Peak District campsite with great value. Clean facilities, hot showers, communal fridge/freezer. Family-friendly, ideal for walkers, stunning views. Mobile signal can be spotty, few local shops. Mostly excellent, many plan to return.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Beautiful countryside around, really peaceful site, good clean loos, friendly owners and plenty of space to pitch without feeling crowded. Information about the showers and hot water for washing up needing coins is plentiful so no excuse for not knowing. There is also a freezer so you can refreeze ice blocks, and there are phone charging lockers too if you need them. Really good value at £9 per person per night!

Disliked Cars racing on nearby roads were an unwanted noisy intrusion, but not the camp site's fault obviously.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Lovely setting and plenty of space , friendly owners, showers and toilets clean and plentiful.
Useful fridge freezer in the washing up room.
Hot water for showers and washing up is on a metre , but appreciate that this can mean it’s not wasted.

Disliked My only comment would be that it would be really good to have private washing areas as there are only 2 sinks with no plugs.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Lovely scenery, quiet and peaceful.

Disliked I appreciate it is a cheap campsite, but paying extra for hot water for washing up or a shower is not appreciated. I did not go back for my second night and drove the two hours home after walking 28 miles!

Local attractions

Eating as much Bakewell pudding as you like is perfectly acceptable because of the abundance of hiking trails on which to burn off the calories (that’s your excuse and you’re sticking to it). The limestone valley of Lathkill Dale, just outside the site, is a very fine place for a walk and has some excellent birdwatching to be done along the way. Further walks await all over the Peak District National Park for all abilities. The relatively gentle paths of Mam Tor and the Ladybower Reservoir are about 40 minutes’ drive away; keen hikers in search of a challenge should aim for Kinder Scout, 50 minutes’ drive away, to climb up to the highest point in the park. A popular option for families (on foot or by bike) is the Monsal Trail (20 minutes' drive), meandering through nature reserves and underground tunnels to finish near Bakewell (for a restorative pudding perchance?). For a spot of history (or to shelter on a damp day), head to Chatsworth, a splendid estate on the banks of the Derwent river half an hour away.
