Rural views all round
Plenty of space

  • Peaceful family-friendly site with views over Lathkill Dale
  • A 10-minute drive from the tearooms of Bakewell
  • Easy access to walking routes through the Peak District National Park
Take a peek at the fab Peak District views from the pitches at Mandale Campsite… whichever spot you pick as your territory, the outlook over the national park is painted in various shades of rural green – all fields, woods and perhaps the occasional farm. And just beyond the site’s fences is gorgeous Lathkill Dale, a fave spot for for hikers and birdwatchers. Peace, quiet and open air are in ample supply here – with heaps of space in the fields there’s no need to be living cheek by jowl with your neighbours. Passing school groups of Duke of Edinburgh’s expeditions are welcomed and housed in a separate field to avoid any friction between teenage antics and chilled family soirées. This is a particularly tempting location for sweet-toothed visitors, with the nearest town being Bakewell, home to famed desserts: debate continues among local and visitors as to which is the most scrumptious between Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding, so clearly the only solution is for the individual to conduct their own scientific test by sampling both. The town’s tearooms can provide you with excellent examples, and there are plenty of pubs and restaurants around too. Feeding options closer to home include the country pubs in Over Haddon and Monyash, each less than a 10-minute drive away (there’s a little play area in Monyash too, if you’ve got energetic kids in tow). If the desire to create fire grabs you, you’re also welcome to light up a disposable barbie to grill a few bangers.

2 bedroom lodge

Liked I’ve been camping on the site each year for about 20 years. It’s a gorgeous spot and very handy for Bakewell and other places. This year and last I booked Standlow Lodge with a friend and our two dogs. Plenty of space, well equipped and private garden is perfect for the dogs

Disliked Nothing disliked but Zi do think it is a bit expensive compared with other similar options.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Spacious and clean, good quality shower and toilet blocks. Stayed for one night to do some walking - exactly what I needed. Great location really close to Lathkill and associated trails. I couldn't get a 5g signal, but that was irrelevant for me anyway.

Liked ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We stayed at Mandale Campsite from Friday to Monday and had a fantastic time. The campsite was clean, peaceful, and well looked after. The facilities were always tidy, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

The atmosphere was lovely, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy time with family. The pitches were spacious, and the location was great for exploring the surrounding area.

We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back again. Thank you for making our weekend so enjoyable!

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Quiet campsite with plenty of room. Lovely views and a nice walk to Over Haddon for a drink at the pub and then a nice walk to Bakewell.

Disliked Don’t think there was anything we disliked. It was value for money. Although the phone signal was poor but you expect that.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Simple, plenty of space, relaxed, quiet.
Phone reception ok (O2)
Fridge
Regularly cleaned during our visit

Disliked 20p a minute for hot water- not the cost, but the inconvenience for washing up or a shower
The corner around the service block is a blind corner- a bit of a hazard for small children and cars. A mirror would be useful
No Wi-Fi. Very few electric hook ups, all in a row by the barn.
No where to rinse clothes, except the washing up sinks

Local attractions

Eating as much Bakewell pudding as you like is perfectly acceptable because of the abundance of hiking trails on which to burn off the calories (that’s your excuse and you’re sticking to it). The limestone valley of Lathkill Dale, just outside the site, is a very fine place for a walk and has some excellent birdwatching to be done along the way. Further walks await all over the Peak District National Park for all abilities. The relatively gentle paths of Mam Tor and the Ladybower Reservoir are about 40 minutes’ drive away; keen hikers in search of a challenge should aim for Kinder Scout, 50 minutes’ drive away, to climb up to the highest point in the park. A popular option for families (on foot or by bike) is the Monsal Trail (20 minutes' drive), meandering through nature reserves and underground tunnels to finish near Bakewell (for a restorative pudding perchance?). For a spot of history (or to shelter on a damp day), head to Chatsworth, a splendid estate on the banks of the Derwent river half an hour away.
