  • Family-run campsite on a dairy farm in the Peak District National Park
  • Access to Lathkill Dale directly from the site
  • Small on-site shop; firepits for hire; animals on site
When you’re keen to get out exploring the Derbyshire Dales, you can’t get much closer to them than Haddon Grove Farm Campsite. This welcoming, family-run caravan and camping site has direct access to spectacular Lathkill Dale from the pitches. Located on a dog-friendly working dairy farm – you are welcome to meet the cows, horses and chickens – with views to the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park, the site was established in the early 1950s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. There are separate fields for family use – with play areas and rope swings – and others for group bookings, ensuring nobody gets disturbed on site. Facilities run to a shower block and wash room, and as barbecues are allowed by the pitches in the camping fields (source any foodie bits in the pretty town of Bakewell, 10 minutes’ drive), firepits can be hired on site. Logs are sold from the small on-site shop, which – more importantly for the kids – also stocks tasty ice cream from a local farm. If you're after something more substantial, head to Annie’s Kitchen (a food van that visits on some weekends) for breakfast sandwiches or evening food and get your mitts on the woodfired pizzas sold most weekends. Drinks are also sold at the bar (open on some weekends).

Primitive gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Such a beautiful spot with an amazing view. A really peaceful and quiet location, great for couples. The toilet and wash facilities exceeded my expectations and were immaculate and very private. We’ve already talked about coming back and bringing friends! The family that run the farm/campsite were really accommodating and friendly. The option to purchase a fire pit and logs etc was a really nice touch. We didn’t bring our own food but there were options to order a takeaway and various places delivered to site.

Disliked Paid for wi-fi and was given the password but I’m not sure whether it was working or if we were in range for watching films on my iPad. However, the area had good enough service to use your phone to use your own internet with hotspot.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked I can't fault this campsite, I try to return a few times a year (outside of the school holidays!). Pitch up where you like, there is enough room for everyone, but it still busy enough to make it interesting. Views are gorgeous, and the shelter provided by the trees also means there is plenty of birdsong in the morning and evening which is very relaxing. Helpful and friendly reception, and the facilities are clean, modern, and well maintained.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Loads of space to pitch up, we even had lots of space to play a few ball games in the afternoon far out without being in anyone's way. Super friendly hosts too. Toilets even on a busy weekend we're fresh, clean and tidy. Lots of drinking water taps available. Thankfully we stayed on a weekend so the two food trucks were there, a fantastic pizza truck (unfortunately I can't remember the name) and a Greek truck (annies) serving up wraps. For a camping food truck you would expect to pay over the odds but the prices were fair and reasonable for some really great food. The breakfast in the morning was also served by Annie's Kitchen and was top notch also. Being so close to Lathkill Dale is great, it's a lovely walk and really not far at all from the site.

Disliked Not dislikes as such, the farm shop was a little empty but still had a few essentials. The coop is only a 10 minute drive away and just means next time we will come a bit more prepared instead of driving into Bakewell. The WiFi is strong near the shop but you can't get any signal from the further fields, again not really a dislike because we don't go camping to sit and scroll reels just some feedback, hence still the 10 star rating for this lovely site.

Local attractions

Scenic walks are to be had along the namesake river in Lathkill Dale, where you can stride out towards Lathkill Head Cave (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) or marvel at the clear springs at The Blue Waters near the peaceful village of Over Haddon (35 minutes). For a slightly longer ramble, Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (90 minutes) reward with prehistoric monuments and ancient burial mounds. Combine your stroll around the verdant grounds at Chatsworth House with a guided tour of the mansion’s ornate rooms packed with priceless antiques, or take in the Elizabethan Walled Gardens at Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes’ drive) after you’ve admired the tapestry collection and medieval chapel. For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
