  • Family-run campsite on a dairy farm in the Peak District National Park
  • Access to Lathkill Dale directly from the site
  • Small on-site shop; firepits for hire; animals on site
When you’re keen to get out exploring the Derbyshire Dales, you can’t get much closer to them than Haddon Grove Farm Campsite. This welcoming, family-run caravan and camping site has direct access to spectacular Lathkill Dale from the pitches. Located on a dog-friendly working dairy farm – you are welcome to meet the cows, horses and chickens – with views to the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park, the site was established in the early 1950s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. There are separate fields for family use – with play areas and rope swings – and others for group bookings, ensuring nobody gets disturbed on site. Facilities run to a shower block and wash room, and as barbecues are allowed by the pitches in the camping fields (source any foodie bits in the pretty town of Bakewell, 10 minutes’ drive), firepits can be hired on site. Logs are sold from the small on-site shop, which – more importantly for the kids – also stocks tasty ice cream from a local farm. If you're after something more substantial, head to Annie’s Kitchen (a food van that visits on some weekends) for breakfast sandwiches or evening food and get your mitts on the woodfired pizzas sold most weekends. Drinks are also sold at the bar (open on some weekends).

Primitive gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked We had a good sized pitch with a lovely view. We were able to choose our own pitch on the non electric gravel area. The new toilet and shower blocks were really clean and had good powerful hot showers. The farmer was welcoming. We were able to bring 3 dogs and have a fire pit. wonderful walks near by which we really enjoyed. A 12.30 check out on the last day made a big difference to us so that was really appreciated.

Disliked A minor point was people were unsure on arrival where to pitch or where to get fire pits from so a few signs would be good. Also we couldn’t see the grey waste disposal point. we would thoroughly recommend this site however.

Powered gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely working farm and site, the farmer and his son were very friendly and helpful when asking about places to visit.
The direct access to Lathkill Dales was great, lovely walks and waterfalls.
The shower blocks and toilets were very clean.
The motorhome pitch area was quiet and clean with lovely views all around.
The pizza van was a nice touch for those who wanted to use it and they will soon be opening a bar.
Great location for walking, we walked to Magpie Mines, Bakewell and the Lathkill Hotel where we had drinks with spectacular views, they also serve lovely food.

Disliked There were no plugs sockets in the toilet/shower areas which would be helpful for drying hair. The farm shop needs work doing to it with very little items sold there and it needs a good clean.
Some of the electrical hook ups kept tripping, we had to swop to another hook up as it tripped around every 20 minutes.
Recycling needs improving, all of the bins were full so we had to put all our waste in the general waste skip.
All said, we would definitely return for another stay.

Primitive gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Stunning views, clean toilets and showers. The water was hot in the showers. Great communication from owners. Easy and direct access to lathkill dale. Where we had our tentbox gave us a stunning view of the hike. Taxis available to Bakewell town. Pizza van was really delicious. Take options available if you don’t fancy pizza. Overall an amazing experience.

Local attractions

Scenic walks are to be had along the namesake river in Lathkill Dale, where you can stride out towards Lathkill Head Cave (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) or marvel at the clear springs at The Blue Waters near the peaceful village of Over Haddon (35 minutes). For a slightly longer ramble, Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (90 minutes) reward with prehistoric monuments and ancient burial mounds. Combine your stroll around the verdant grounds at Chatsworth House with a guided tour of the mansion’s ornate rooms packed with priceless antiques, or take in the Elizabethan Walled Gardens at Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes’ drive) after you’ve admired the tapestry collection and medieval chapel. For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
