  • Livestock on site; heated outdoor pool, barbecues and firepits
Whether you’re looking for a romantic hideaway, treating the family to a break under the stars or celebrating with friends, The Old Stone Barn, five minutes’ drive from historic Olney in Buckinghamshire, has got you very nicely covered indeed. Accommodation is in spacious safari tents on a farm that’s home to all sorts of birds and beasties from ducks and donkeys to alpacas – they’ll all soon be along to say ‘hello’. The tents are set in a peaceful grass field to the rear of the property. Each one has its own private, well-equipped kitchen and bathroom, proper beds and lots of living space, so you get plenty of home comforts alongside your glamping experience. Barbecues and firepits are provided, and there is ample space for everyone (including any dogs along for the trip) to run around, kick a ball and generally let off steam. You can also use the heated outdoor swimming pool, only a short stroll from the glamping field; it has a sun deck, so when weather permits you can chill on sun loungers with a drink or an alfresco lunch. Source goodies for barbecues and picnics from Olney, a lively market town also packed with shops and supermarkets, cafés, pubs and restaurants.

Local attractions

There are rural walks directly from the glamping field; you can stroll along the banks of the River Great Ouse into Olney (45 minutes on foot), or have a family ramble along paths in Emberton Country Park (an hour), where there’s a playpark, a sculpture trail and plenty of quiet lakeside spots for picnics. Bird-lovers can (possibly) spot egrets and herons in their natural watery habitat at Summer Leys Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive), while at Sywell Country Park (20 minutes) you can visit the colourful butterfly garden – it’s best between May and August – and follow footpaths around the reservoir (cycling is not allowed), which is home to wading swans and mallards. Other options for exploring the Buckinghamshire countryside include hiring a barge to potter down the River Nene from White Mills Marina (20 minutes). You can learn all about the canal system at the informative Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne (half an hour), where there’s also a thatched pub with views over the Grand Union Canal.
