  • Dog-friendly pub site in the Chilterns National Landscape
  • In Great Missenden, 15 minutes’ walk from the Road Dahl Museum
  • Friendly pub with a football pitch, events marquee and food menu
A pub, a football pitch and the occasional hot air balloon take-off – The Black Horse certainly has a lot for guests to look forward to. Set in the scenic Chilterns National Landscape, the pop-up grass pitches here are in the grounds of a traditional pub that serves up homemade meals and a good range of drinks, all of which can be enjoyed in the cosy interior or out in the beer garden. If you’re lucky with your timings, you might get to see a hot air balloon taking off from the site grounds; this happens every now and then. When there are no flying objects to speak of, gather some pals and head to the on-site football pitch for a friendly game. Events take place in the marquee at the other end of the field on some weekends, and guests are welcome to join in. The Black Horse is on the edge of the village of Great Missenden, where the author Roald Dahl lived and wrote some of his books – he's now commemorated in The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, a 15-minute walk away from the pub. There are coffee shops, a food shop and a train station within 10 minutes’ walk of the site, and a small play park within 15 minutes’ walk. Regular events take place in the village throughout the year, too. When you’re keen to explore further afield, head out onto one of the local walks or make your way to High Wycombe or Berkhamsted (both 20 minutes’ drive away) for some classic Chilterns locations.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived.
We were informed that there was a party being held that evening and that hot air balloons were leaving early in the morning!
Was a beautiful, interesting sight to wake up and watch before starting to pack up and get on the road.
We had ploughman's for our meal, lovely but hubby would have enjoyed his more if it was on a normal plate and not on slate as hes a builder and felt like food shouldn't be eaten of it.
Landlady was lovely and friendly, stopping to chat and tell us about her time she went on the hot balloon ride.

Disliked Apart from the ploughman's being served on a piece of slate rather than a plate, all was good.

Liked Not much. There was water and a pub to get a beer.

Disliked Noisy roads on both sides, sanitary facilities very poor, garbage container full and garbage at side, toilet in the pub not clean and not properly working, no flushing water. Finally you just book for a pitch.

From the manager: Good Evening
Firstly I would like to apologise for the waste problem. We have our road closed Currently due to a cycle path being made. And unfortunately the bin company has had a problem getting through. I belive a pop up tent only says it all. With great food and beer on site with wonderful walks.I think its great for £10 a night!
Please feel free to come again and il be happy to put you up for a free one night stay for the inconvenience of the bins.
Kind Regards

Virginia R.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very relaxed, huge field to camp in so didn't feel squashed in with other campers, ideal to have the pub next door for sitting outside and having drinks, and then for eating at in the evening.

Disliked The outside tap didn't work which meant when the pub was closed there was no access to drinking water. The pub was great at filling up our water bottles when it was open but meant (as it was really hot) that once we had drunk that there was no more access to water to drink, cook or wash without having a car to go offsite and buy some bottled water when the pub was closed. This felt like it could be dangerous in hot weather as you could quickly dehydrate.

From the manager: Hey Virginia
Thank you for your feedback to us.
I must apologise for the outside tap not working, which I belive was the barn area. There is another outside tap just behind the pub, however rightly so this should of been working. I do apologise and I will look into this.
Kind Regards

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked It was quiet midweek when I stayed. The site is a fairly level field next to a small country pub. Staff were friendly and helpful but cooked food wasn't available on the 2 nights i was there . Still, there was another pub nearby and the food there was fine.
The hum of traffic on the other side of a stand of lovely trees started about 5am but no noisier than the occasional pigeon. There is a Chiltern way walk next to the site which leads to the pleasant village nearby.
I enjoyed my stay and it was not expensive. I would go there again.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Excellent service and greeting in bar. Lovely little pub with good parking. Had Sunday lunch …..hungry so ate the lot. Could have been hotter but not bad.
Stayed one night in roof tent. Already aware no showers but been advised there will be eventually…..new management still ‘finding feet’
Location perfect as midway stop to Brum from Croydon.
Would camp there again

Disliked Portaloo but new management looking to upgrade soon
