  • Family-friendly pop-up tourer site in the Chilterns National Landscape
  • Henley-on-Thames half an hour’s drive and Oxford 35 minutes
  • Stabling for horses by pre-booking; 15 minutes’ walk to shops and pubs
When you’re after a few days of chilled walking and cycling in the Chilterns National Landscape, make your base on the pop-up site at Buckinghamshire’s Maplefield Farm, where touring pitches are on a level, grass horse paddock sheltered by a small copse of mature trees. There’s not a huge amount here in the way of sophisticated amenities (only portable loos), but there’s loads of outdoor space, and barbecues are allowed on your pitch for a taster of alfresco cooking. If the latter doesn’t appeal, there are pubs in the neighbouring village of Stokenchurch (15 minutes’ walk), where you can also restock in the convenience store. Should you need anything else, High Wycombe supermarkets and restaurants are only 15 minutes away by car. There is also accommodation for your own horse at Maplefield Farm, strictly according to availability…. Always check with the farm owners before setting off with your equine companions. There’s hacking directly from the site, and you can also book in for a weekend of training with your horse in the manège. Tuition is also available over show jumps, and there’s parking for trailers and horse boxes in the hardstanding yard.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The 'wild' camping note was an appeal and we felt very much this was the case and enjoyed the flexibility of being able to chose where we were able to pitch the tent, i.e. no restrictions. We pitched to the side of the field in the small wooded area under a large oak tree which provided additional shelter and made a small fire pit; there were no requirements in having to use a fire grate although we had brought provisions in case. We were the first to arrive and were joined by three others later in the day and evening; plenty of space for everyone and not congested. The portable toilet was very clean. The owner did take time to come around and speak to everyone and was available if any queries.

Disliked: Traffic noise was the only real down side of the location.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Perfect location in the middle of a field, really basic but that’s exactly what we like as it felt very much like wild camping! Only one portaloo and no other services but that’s fine for us as we have a camper. Will absolutely be back :)

Disliked: Quite close to the road so you can hear cars all day but you can’t see it and you have beautiful views across the fields so didn’t bother us!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A beautiful location with very pretty wild flowers and horses in the field next door. Lots of space and lovely to hear the birds in the morning and an owl at night.

Disliked: Might be helpful to have a few areas of shorter grass but wouldn't put me off going again.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Good directions from the owner and a large field with plenty of space to spread out. We booked for 1 night near home to just test out a new tent. If you don't know the area the Chilterns are beautiful. The 2 felds slope up from the entrance but plenty of flat areas at the top. Portaloo was clean and stocked with toilet paper. Lovely to see the horses in the adjoining field.

Disliked: Although the paddock flowers and long grasses were pretty it really needed a path to be mown down to the portaloo as knee or waist height wet grasses were difficult to walk through, and it would have been better if there were patches mown for tents as we needed to do a bit of stamping down thistles and other larger grasses to get an area to pitch. Also the top of the site is near to a busy road so there is road noise through the hedge.. Worth noting the site doesn't have a drinking water tap so we had to buy in a lot of water.
