  • Shepherd’s hut on a farm in the North Wessex Downs
  • A five-minute drive from Hungerford and its horse-drawn barges
  • A few minutes’ walk from the local 17th-century pub and a shop
Getting your country fix is easy at Foxglove Hideaway in North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The shepherd’s hut at this site is on Foxglove, a mixed farm of Devon and Angus cattle, Clun Forest sheep, mule sheep, pigs and free-range chickens. With arable crops of barley, wheat, sugar beet and turnips (used as winter food), this is an excellent rural spot to lay low for a while. An everyday agenda here might involve cycling, hiking and stargazing in the North Wessex Downs or visiting the local collection of cafés, pubs and farm shops three minutes’ walk away, which include a 17th-century red brick inn. Hungerford is only a five-minute drive away too, where the Kennet and Avon Canal features boat tours on traditional wide beam boats. In Kintbury (five minutes’ drive), there are also horse-drawn barges in the style of the 19th-century mode of transport. The owners, Simon and Kathe, were foster carers until 2013, when Kathe returned to her nursing career working with vulnerable people. Their shepherd’s hut is designed as a base to explore the local countryside, and already has splendid views over farm fields. Barbecues are kindly allowed.
