If you’d like to holiday under canvas in style while brushing up on your eco-credentials, take a look at JOY Retreat, a small glamping hideaway at St Aubin, Jersey. Run along organic lines, the accommodation is in spacious yurts – temporary structures so the site can be returned to its natural state with minimal impact – with lots of creature comforts to keep you cosy and comfortable. Set in woodland overlooking St Aubin’s Bay, each handcrafted yurt is built from sustainably sourced materials and sleeps up to four guests in a mix of double and sofa beds. All linens and towels are supplied, along with bedside tables, reading lights and hanging space for your clothes. Pretty rugs add a touch of colour, and plants a hint of greenery. Your private outdoor space incorporates a firepit for barbecues, a picnic table and sheepskin-lined seating. Each yurt has an ensuite shower and composting toilet, plus access to shared cooking facilities. Food crops and wild flowers are grown in rotation between the yurts to encourage wildlife corridors, and you can rent bikes to explore the island or connect with public transport services.

You can have a potter around the indie stores in the seaside village of St Aubin (15 minutes’ walk), with its photogenic harbour and cobbled streets lined with relaxed quayside pubs and refined seafront restaurants – just the job for enjoying supper as the sun sets over the bay. Views stretch to the 400-year-old Elizabeth Castle, an austere fortress that you can reach on foot in about 15 minutes at low tide. Once there, climb the impregnable battlements or inspect the rooms where soldiers were once billeted. Following Jersey’s former train line, the Railway Walk starts at St Aubin (15 minutes’ stroll from the pitches); you can follow the gentle trail through woodland to La Corbière (an hour and 20 minutes) on the island’s dramatic west coast. A causeway leads to the landmark La Corbière Lighthouse (an hour and a half), another splendid spot for glorious sunsets on clear days. To learn about the island during World War II, visit the Jersey War Tunnels (50 minutes). At this underground museum, you can explore the tunnels on a self-guided audio tour, see thought-provoking exhibitions on life under German occupation and hear about the Resistance movement.
