It's free, quick and easy!
- Tree-lined holiday village on Sicily’s Milazzo Cape
- By a beach with clear waters for fishing, diving and nature spotting
- Diving centre, seawater pool, pizzeria and beach pier
On a rocky finger of land jutting into the Tyrrhenian Sea, Milazzo has been a coveted prize since ancient times... and if naval battles were still commonplace off the coast of Sicily, then Camping Riva Smeralda might be seeing off invaders 24/7.
Set on a prime spot where the sea laps right up to the groves of eucalyptus and olive trees, this resort has a true back-to-nature atmosphere while keeping all modern on site. It's by a golden sandy beach, edged by high cliffs and clear waters popular for fishing, diving and wildlife spotting, or you could opt merely to stock up from the site’s grocery and take your pick of a dozen secluded picnicking spots.
If the salty air and sunshine wear you out (they ought to), you can dine on pizza within stumbling distance of your berth, or settle down on the sands or the 30-metre pier for peaceful hours gazing out over the water. Events and activities as well as kids' games are arranged by the site team so you and the offspring don't have to stir too far for entertainment either.
The site also has its own diving centre, a seawater pool for kids to splash in, and a disco for those who come alive after dark.
Messina town and port are a 20-minute drive away, and you can reach the departure point for the Aeolian Islands within 15 minutes.

Local attractions
Many people only pass through Messina enroute to the Aeolian Islands: understandable, but a missed opportunity.
The Old Town takes on a lovely pink hue at sunset, and snappers will get the best shots of the peninsula from the top of old Norman castle. Those in the know start a walk with a visit to the massive cave, concealing a chapel to Saint Anthony of Padua; the path from there takes you by tempting bathing pools, finishing up with views of the islands from the lighthouse.
You can explore the peninsula from trails near the site, and avail yourself of the diving school for a dazzling underwater view. But it’s hard to view the shimmering UNESCO Shangri-la of the Aeolian Islands without wanting to hop on the next boat, so head to the port for a flotilla of ferries out to trek up the still-seething volcano on Stromboli; wander the lush and flower-filled valleys of Salina, mingle among the oligarchs in the chic marina at Panare, or step back centuries on Alicudi, where boats and mules are the only transport.
Catania is a little under two hours’ drive away. Lent a certain drama by nearby Mt Etna, the morning fish market in this ancient town is opera, battle and ritual rolled into one.
