There’s a lot to like about the resort town of Zalakaros – not least its proximity to lots of excellent tourist attractions, from nature reserves and hiking areas to family-friendly attractions. There’s one thing that really makes this town stand out though – and that’s the Zalakaros Thermal Spa, a huge complex with wellness treatments, medical programmes, an outdoor pool and slides for the kids. If that sounds like something you might enjoy, take a look at Thermal Camping Zalakaros, just a few minutes’ walk from the entrance to the spa. A day or two at the baths should go a long way towards helping you have a fabulously relaxing break – but the campsite is also designed with peaceful chillout times in mind. It’s a large and very green place full of mature trees that provide plenty of shade to keep you cool. There’s a quiet countryside vibe at this site, but it’s actually well located within the town – that means you’ll easily be able to walk to a choice of shops and places to eat. Too far? There’s a restaurant on site too, along with a kitchen area and outdoor space for barbecues. A hairdresser and masseur are also on site to help you look and feel your best, and there’s a playground (in a natural style with a stream to play in) to entertain the kids while you relax. Dogs are welcome too, and have a dog park where they can have a good run around.

Local attractions

You’ll want to spend some time checking out all the various areas of the thermal baths, of course, but there are plenty of other ways to fill your days nearby too. For starters, you can hire bikes in town to explore the local lanes, or get your hiking shoes on for short walks near the town or longer outings to scenic areas like Kőszikla Gorge (25 minutes’ drive) or the nature reserve around Little Balaton (15 minutes). There are lots of birds to be spotted around Little Balaton, but if you’d like to see something bigger, head to Buffalo reserve Zalakomár (15 minutes), for jeep rides and horse-drawn carriage rides among the biggest herd in the country. Állatsimogató - Fenyvespuszta (15 minutes) is another good choice, with pony rides and a petting zoo. Beyond Little Balaton is the huge Lake Balaton itself – a wonderful place to visit with beach areas and watersports galore, plus the chance to visit places like the grand Festetics Palace (35 minutes).
