  • Peaceful hilltop site overlooking Tominé Reservoir near Guatavita
  • An hour and a half’s drive from Bogotá, with public transport options
  • Play area and mini football field on site, plus grill rentals
If you’re looking for a place to camp near Bogotá – whether to escape the daily grind, breathe in some fresh air, or spend a few days surrounded by nature – Camping San Francisco is an excellent option. This site sits on a hill on the outskirts of Guatavita (10 minutes’ drive), approximately 50 kilometres north of Bogotá, which means that driving there from the capital should take less than an hour and a half under normal conditions. It’s also possible to arrive by public transport and complete the final leg by hiking along a trail. Being within easy reach of Bogotá makes this a great spot for weekend getaways, romantic escapes, trips with friends or just some time out in the open air without too much travelling. Make the journey here and you’ll be rewarded with a peaceful setting, mountain scenery and plenty of space to relax. Facilities on site include a play area, a mini football field and other recreational facilities such as a volleyball net and 'tejo' courts. You can also use the hot showers at no extra cost, rent grills for your outdoor cooking and buy firewood for an evening around the campfire. Finally, the splendid views from this hilltop spot are well worth a mention: they range from the Tominé Reservoir to the west, to Montecillo Hill (a good hiking location) to the east, also taking in the surrounding mountains.

Local attractions

In the lakeside town of Guatavita (10 minutes’ drive), there are several spots from where to admire the reservoir. Check out El Faro, a lighthouse in the hills with a large viewing platform (and plenty of outdoor space for picnics and games), or the Mirador 360 Guatavita, where a heart-framed bench is just the spot for your Insta photoshoot. Don’t let the brown/reddish colour of the waters at Guasca’s Hot Springs (25 minutes) put you off. This is simply due to the presence of iron in the groundwater, which is also believed to give these hot springs their healing properties. Besides the outdoor pool, there is a wellness area with a sauna and Turkish bath. Into extreme sports? Or maybe you’re simply ready to face your fear of heights? Either way, head to Pionono mountain (50 minutes), where multiple outfits arrange paragliding flights. In particular, Parapente Paraíso has tandem flights with certified instructors, ziplines, ropes courses and a swing that rotates a full 360 degrees.
