  • Adults-only touring pitches at a rural site with views of Eryri peaks
  • Llanddwyn Island 20 minutes’ drive; Caernarfon half an hour
  • Restaurant with alfresco dining and covered pods; drinking water
Mountain views, sandy beaches and a rich cultural heritage – what more do you need to click on the green button and book your spot at adults-only Afon Braint? This peaceful rural site – which is so close to the Welsh river of the same name and its Giant Rhuddgaer Stepping Stones (15 minutes’ walk), it has borrowed that very name for itself – sits on Anglesey’s south-eastern corner, within the coastal belt that makes up the Anglesey National Landscape. On the A4080 road between the villages of Niwbwrch (just under a mile, about 20 minutes on foot) and Dwyran (five minutes’ drive or a 25-minute walk), Afon Braint comes with spacious gravel touring pitches. Be aware that there is no electric hook-up; what is there, though, are essentials such as a toilet block and fresh drinking water, plus grey and chemical waste disposal points. Spectacular views of the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) accompany the meals you consume in the picnic area, and there’s also a restaurant with a large patio and covered pods if you want to take in the mountain vistas regardless of the weather. The nearest pub is in Niwbwrch, which also has a fish and chip shop and a supermarket, with more shopping and dining options in Llangefni (20 minutes) and Bangor (25 minutes). Windswept strolls await at Maes Parcio Ynys Llanddwyn and Newborough Beach (15 minutes), a nature reserve with a large dune system, marshes and a pine forest, plus tidal Llanddwyn Island (20 minutes), with a lighthouse overlooking the rocky shore.

What customers say

Top small park, ace hosts & service. Spotless, peaceful, stunning Snowdonia views. Level, roomy pitches. Great cafe & pizza delivery! Easy access to beach/forest. Only downside: no showers, & one loo sometimes shared with cafe folk.

Liked Clean amenities

Disliked unfortunately I had a very uncomfortable experience on arrival with a male member of staff.

Due to travel delays we arrived at 5:36pm and phoned the number in the booking email as instructed. We were told the site closed at 5pm, which already seemed quite unusual for a campsite. I apologised several times for being late and even offered to leave and find somewhere else if it caused a problem.

During the conversation he repeatedly reiterated that the 5pm closing time was stated in the booking information. After checking the Pitchup booking advert later, I could see it is technically listed, but it is buried within the policies section and not particularly obvious when making the booking, this was a last minute booking so it was something I had genuinely missed.

Despite apologising multiple times, my apologies were never acknowledged and the tone of the conversation remained abrupt and quite dismissive. It felt very much like being told off rather than simply being checked in.

The most uncomfortable part (and the reason for the 1 star rating) came when my husband joined us. His demeanour changed almost instantly. His tone became polite and friendly, and from that point on he directed everything to my husband. Even though I had been the one speaking with him and dealing with the booking, he essentially stopped acknowledging me altogether.

During the site briefing he continued addressing my husband while completely ignoring me, despite the fact we were both standing there. The change in tone and body language was very noticeable and it left me feeling quite uncomfortable and unwelcome.

I understand that arriving late may cause inconvenience, and I had already apologised several times and offered to leave if needed. However, the difference in how I was treated compared to my husband was very noticeable and disappointing.

As a woman who often travels and camps, I also feel it’s important to say that if I had been arriving alone, the interaction would have made me feel very uneasy about staying on the site.

For clarity, the entire interaction at the gate and briefing area was captured on our dashcam, so my review simply reflects what took place.

The site appears to have many positive reviews on here and also on Google, which is why we booked in the first place. However, I would encourage anyone considering staying here to also read some of the lower rated reviews and the responses to them to get a fuller picture of other guests’ experiences.

Based on this experience, I would not feel comfortable returning and felt it was important to share so others can make an informed decision when booking.

From the manager: Melissa, I’m sorry that you had to wait at the main gate for a member of staff to come across to the site to let you in following a late arrival. From the offset, the need to wait to get on the site appeared to be an issue for you and you took objection to everything being said – I cannot recall finishing a single sentence during either the phone call or when opening the gate to let you in. You repeatedly interjected in an aggressive manner, including claims that the arrival information could not be seen on the Pitchup website or within the booking confirmation email provided by Pitchup. Prior to receiving this review I had actually reported your observations to Pitchup for investigation, so I appreciate the confirmation in this review that the information had indeed been provided to you; I shall forward this update to them. I have also been made aware that you have been using Pitchup for making bookings for a number of years now, so I am confused as to how you have come to the conclusion that you have (as I had been given the impression that you were new user of Pitchup). Given it is a standard feature for sites to have an arrival time, for me it does not follow what you said when you were here with us. To be frank, I found your argumentative approach to gaining access to the site very uncomfortable and it gave me concerns about the rest of your stay. However on subsequently speaking to your husband Ricky about which pitches were available, I found him to be a pleasant and easy going chap to talk to and yes, he gave me the confidence to continue. However, this confidence was short lived once you snapped ‘No!’ when asked whether you had had a long journey to get here. With conversing with you in a general manner was also being unsuccessful, I was grateful that your husband was present for the remainder of our conversation, which is why perhaps you picked up on the lift in tone. Whilst your review attributes this to gender, I’ll be blunt here and confirm it was down to your attitude and manner towards your host. I appreciate that after a long journey, some may be grumpy, but I’m afraid to say that I found dealing with you very difficult indeed. Whilst I spoke to both of you throughout, you said nothing for the remainder of the conversation and generally looked towards the ground.
Thankfully, the other reviews do speak for themselves, with feedback provided by a whole range of guests, both male and female.

Liked Gorgeous views, friendly staff, really dog friendly (welcome dog treat on arrival) and great location. Clean facilities. Cute cafe - I only had a coffee but the menu was great and lots of gluten free options. Only one mixed gender toilet - but only 5 pitches so not much issue in waiting

Power optional gravel caravan site (large)

Liked Very warm welcome and easy to find. The gent who met us at the gate was really friendly and professional. He showed us to our pitch and made sure we got our electric hooked up and working. He then gave me a brief tour of the facilities before leaving us to it. Ideal hassle free short stay option.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Continue on to Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens (20 minutes) for strolls among woodland and past waterfalls. Alongside collections of archaeology and local crafts, Oriel Môn (20 minutes) also displays works by modern and contemporary artists such as Charles Tunnicliffe, known for his depictions of birds, and landscape painter Sir John Kyffin Williams.
