  • Quiet, laid-back, family run site on riverbank
  • "What a fantastic wee hidden gem."
  • "This is a no frills fantastic little site"
‘Don’t expect a swimming pool, a bar or a shop’ say the owners of Dolgamedd Caravan and Camping Park – this laidback Gwynedd site is a place that's all about the joy of no-frills stays, embracing the natural setting and soaking up the peace of its fabulous Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park location. Indeed there may be no pool, but this laidback family-run site has something that's arguably just as enticing, as it's on the banks of the Wnion river, with direct access to the river for fishing, paddles and swims if you like (chillier than a pool, perhaps, but still a whole lot of fun…) Guests have been coming here for many years, with several of them returning time and again for repeated doses of the peaceful atmosphere on site and the plethora of outdoor activities available in the local area. Dolgellau (10 minutes' drive) is a well-known hub for walkers and hikers, and there are plenty of options nearby for mountain bikers and climbers too. Getting out and about should be fairly straightforward, as the site is only a little way off the A494 and has a bus stop almost outside. The evening activity of choice on site is usually a quiet glass of wine and a barbecue or campfire by the river – and to keep that peaceful vibe going there's a no-music policy here, and a general request to preserve the peace (party types and large groups will need to look elsewhere for their accommodation). Although this site is no-frills in style, it does have a good collection of essential facilities for its guests – these include toilets, showers, wifi, a launderette, a shared fridge and freezer, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Liked: Lovely site, stayed riverside. Beautiful big pitch by the river.

Disliked: Only thing was we were by bridge so motorbike noise . Lovely sunny days, so they were all out in force. But can't be helped.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site (riverside)

Liked: Lovely welcome and well kept site. Great pitch by the river. Facilities good and clean. It was a real bonus to be able to have a camp fire. Plan on going back.

Disliked: The road was a little close to our pitch but everything else about our location more than made up for it. Won’t stop me booking again and asking for the same spot.

Powered grass tent or campervan site (riverside)

Liked: Excellent site. The staff were very helpful. The location of the site is very good with shops and eating places a short drive away. The actual pitch was down by the river which was very good.

Disliked: Be aware that during the day pitch number 5 can get noisy. It is next to the tarzan swing over the river.

Middle field powered grass site

Liked: Loved our stay here with our dog along the riverbank in our campervan & awning. Lots of space to pitch up and came the day before most people were checking out on the bank holiday Monday, so felt like we almost had the place to ourselves! Peaceful and beautiful spot. Great clean facilities and helpful staff. Check out the walk just behind the mobile homes- there’s a really cool bridge you can walk up onto (assuming old train bridge?) Excellent base camp location to go out on day trips and explore all the area has to offer- and only a short drive to Dolgellau, which is definitely worth a mooch. Signal/wifi did not work on our spot, but we were actually quite happy to unplug from the digital world for a few days- there was adequate wifi at the facilities building when we needed to check messages.

Disliked: Not that we disliked it, but just so people are aware.. there are big jets fly over during the day, but I don’t think you can avoid that in this part of wales (my husband was actually very excited to watch them zoom past, reminded him of his childhood camping trips) and the campsite is near a road- but honestly it didn’t bother us, nor disrupt our sleep- we tuned it out to the sound of the river flowing, the birds chirping and the sheep baaah-ing :)

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site (riverside)

Liked: Location next to stream. Clean toilets/showers. Helpful staff

Disliked: Some traffic noise. Advertised as quiet site no loud music. Unfortunately the tents next door were a large group and played loud music until 11.00pm so didn’t get our early peaceful night as hoped.

Local attractions

This area is home to some of the most popular walking trails in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park, including the Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk (both trailheads are within 10 minutes' drive). Those of a more ambitious nature may like to tackle the Minffordd Path up Cadair Idris (15 minutes away) or the mountain bike paths at Coed-y-Brenin (20 minutes) while families and leisure cyclists try the riverside Mawddach Trail (10 minutes). Up the thrill levels again with an activity at the National White Water Centre (half an hour) or one of the adventures on offer at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes). All a bit too hair-raising? Opt instead to visit the Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour) or take a stroll around the colourful village of Portmeirion (40 minutes). Taking to the coast is always an option, too – perhaps for some bird spotting at RSPB Mawddach Valley (10 minutes), some history at Harlech Castle (45 minutes) or a day on the beach at Barmouth (25 minutes).
