Family-run The Paddocks Caravan and Camping is a small and ultra-organised site with well-maintained, flat and spacious pitches in north Wales. It’s less than five minutes’ drive to the beach at Criccieth, and around half an hour to the imposing castles at Harlech and Caernarfon, making this a cracking adults-only base from which to explore the Llŷn Peninsula. It's a 10-minute trip by car to the wide, south-facing sands at Pwllheli, a former haunt of smugglers and pirates. You'll find it quite a bit calmer these days, especially if you follow the fab Llŷn Peninsula Coastal Path round the peninsula for views and wildlife and splendid sea air. Sandcastles, paddling and rockpool exploration are all there for the taking. If you’d rather ditch the car, a bus stop is five minutes’ walk away, or you can explore on two legs – perhaps a good place to start is the local village of Llanystumdwy (five minutes’ walk), as it’s the burial place of former Prime Minister David Lloyd George. You can see his grave and visit a small museum, and afterwards stroll down the banks of the scenic River Dwyfor. Gleaming facilities on site include a well-lit shower block with two private bathrooms (each containing a large shower, wash-hand basin and toilet), plus three adjacent toilets and two separate showers (each with a dressing room and one with a hair dryer). Nearby is a covered communal area with a table and seating, plus two washing-up sinks, a fridge-freezer, a separate drinks fridge, a microwave, toaster and a kettle. There's also a phone-charging point. Firepits and barbecues are allowed, but they must be raised off the ground and set up on one of the concrete slabs provided. Small chimineas and barbecues are available for nightly hire on site, and you can buy logs and charcoal here too. Please note that parties are not permitted – this is a quiet site.

Liked Its a central location on the Llyn Peninsula, having a car is essential (even if the train station was closer, they are very infrequent) and so travel by car to most destinations is convenient. We got some local advice from Juliette to avoid a couple spots at the weekend as they can be very busy so we changed our plans as needed.

Having water taps directly by the pitches (we had one on the electric pole) is an excellent idea. The inside bathrooms, the ones accessed from the kitchen area, are easily the nicest on the site with lots of room. A little shelf in there could help though (there’s never enough places to balance things!).

I only used the kitchen (other than washing up) once so I can't really comment on that - we do have an electric stove, kettle, BBQ etc for our own cooking. The pitch was very large, plenty of room for the tent, awning and car.

Llanystumdwy has a real hidden gem in the Lloyd George museum, I'd really recommend that. The pub is being refurbished so hopefully that opens soon

The site is very clean and well kept, Juliette and Leigh are very friendly and happy to help.

Not a could have been better, just advice for future, the rabbit farm next door is a working business and can be noisy from early on. This didn't bother us but the corner pitch we had (#2 I think) is the closest and worth avoiding if that might bother you.

Disliked (This from my mum) The bathrooms only seemed to have 1 hairdryer between them, and on the last day that particular one had been locked as it was quiet so she said it was a good job she'd washed it the night before. I don't mind facilities closing down towards end of season, but it really shouldn't block access to something and potentially a lower season rate could be applied.

Tents and Vans share the same space next to each other - the field isn't huge but there is room in the rear of the field (we noticed a couple of vans using it) that could help separate them - van dwellers can be very noisy, especially when in a tent - not just voices travelling from inside (I do think some of them think their vans are soundproof!) but the constant bang-bang-bang of doors and sliding openings does lead me to prefer sites that separate vans and tents.

I though £5 per night for a firepit/chimera seemed a little steep, other sites I have stayed at simply have them scattered around to use.
