- Well-maintained grass pitches and shower block; communal dining area
Family-run The Paddocks Caravan and Camping is a small and ultra-organised site with well-maintained, flat and spacious pitches in north Wales. It’s less than five minutes’ drive to the beach at Criccieth, and around half an hour to the imposing castles at Harlech and Caernarfon, making this a cracking adults-only base from which to explore the Llŷn Peninsula.
It's a 10-minute trip by car to the wide, south-facing sands at Pwllheli, a former haunt of smugglers and pirates. You'll find it quite a bit calmer these days, especially if you follow the fab Llŷn Peninsula Coastal Path round the peninsula for views and wildlife and splendid sea air. Sandcastles, paddling and rockpool exploration are all there for the taking.
If you’d rather ditch the car, a bus stop is five minutes’ walk away, or you can explore on two legs – perhaps a good place to start is the local village of Llanystumdwy (five minutes’ walk), as it’s the burial place of former Prime Minister David Lloyd George. You can see his grave and visit a small museum, and afterwards stroll down the banks of the scenic River Dwyfor or pop into the pub for a pint.
Gleaming facilities on site include a well-lit shower block with two private bathrooms each containing a large shower, wash-hand basin and toilet. Nearby is a covered communal area with a table and seating, plus a double sink for washing pots and pans. A handy fridge and freezer are also there for guest use.
Firepits and barbecues are allowed, but they must be raised off the ground and set up on one of the concrete slabs provided. Please note that parties are not permitted – this is a quiet site.

Local attractions
Keen to get out and about on two legs? Perhaps a good place to start is the local village of Llanystumdwy (five minutes’ walk), as it’s the burial place of former Prime Minister David Lloyd George. You can see his grave and visit a small museum, and afterwards stroll down the banks of the scenic River Dwyfor or pop into the pub for a pint.
If you fancy more challenging pursuits, hire a dinghy and learn to sail off the lengthy beach at Pwllheli (10 minutes’ drive), or head for the hiking trails, cycling routes and mountain trails of Snowdonia National Park (15 minutes). Die-hard adrenaline-junkies can zoom down zipwires through former slate mines at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes).
A whole host of splendid castles await discovery: along the Llŷn Peninsula coast, the seaside town of Criccieth (five minutes) is overlooked by its medieval fortress, sitting atop a mighty headland and open for guided tours. Awe-inspiring Caernarfon Castle (25 minutes) was 47 years in the building by Edward I and stands over the River Seiont – a visit includes tours and military exhibits in the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum. Equally spectacular in setting and architecture is Harlech Castle (half an hour).
