General

  • Five-acre site overlooking the Vale of Llangollen
  • Only half a mile from the beautiful Horseshoe Pass
  • An ideal location from which to visit Snowdonia National Park

Abbey Grange Campsite is at the front of The Abbey Grange Hotel and the five-acre site overlooks the Vale of Llangollen.

Surrounded by fields and mountains, the campsite is only 2 miles from the historic market town of Llangollen and half a mile from the beautiful Horseshoe Pass. It provides an ideal location from which to explore the immediate surrounding hills and mountains and also for visiting Snowdonia National Park and the north Wales coast.

Locally at Llangollen, there are horse-drawn canal barges and classic steam railway as well as many outdoor activities such as canoeing, rafting and climbing. The campsite has male and female showers and toilet facilities.

Campers are also welcome to use the hotel facilities such as the restaurant, bar and games room, as well as the outdoor play area.

Great location - everything else not so great 06/11/2018

Location great, very short drive to Llangollen and Horseshoe Falls.
Big hill behind you can hike up, quite steep though.
Left to your own devices - don’t have people coming round to check up on you.
Dogs are allowed and were all kept under control and in their own area so no fights

    Disliked:

When we checked in the man didn’t tell us how to get into the field, or anything about what’s local, just took money, gave change and walked off. I also put on booking that it’s our anniversary so anything special they can do would be great. He read it whilst we were stood infront of him then put the paper behind him. You basically are just camping in a field that belongs to the hotel and it appears that they’re not really that bothered if you’re not a hotel guest.
Cockerel cockadoodledoos every morning early so not reccomended if you’re not an early riser!
There are only 2 ladies toilets on site, one is in a block with a shower and the other is on its own. The single one had no toilet paper for all of Sunday and Monday, appeared that they all hadn’t been cleaned the whole time we were there (Friday to Monday). The one with the shower had a small amount of toilet roll but the floor was disgusting, dirty and wet because the toilet was leaking. Not nice at all after you have just had a clean shower. Mens shower was not working the whole time we were here.
Ground really uneven, woke up sliding down air bed constantly.
Not advertised as being next to a busy main through road - would not camp next to the road because cars and bikes travel very fast down there despite 40 limit.
Other campers at midnight on Saturday decidedly that would be the best time to blast Ed Sheeran - not the sites fault but nothing was done about it and there were a lot of children here on Saturday too.

Outside play area for the children was brilliant - the biggest plus of all when talking specifically about the campsite. Location and scenery stunning. Had a lovely visit to the Ponderosa Cafe on the Horseshoe Pass, a nice time wondering through Llangollen and a perfect meal with brilliant, attentive service at Fouzi's Cafe Bar (at the Bridge Hotel in the town centre).

    Disliked:

Rude lady who booked us into our pitch.

Slow service when ordering food at the Abbey Grange Hotel on the first evening (felt like I might die waiting for the customer before me to finish being served and when we were finally served the barman was slow and stared at the till when keying in as if he were decoding German wartime messages). Despite this deep concentration, he still got our order wrong! The same server later in a polite yet too much trouble way made it clear that we were inconveniencing him when ordering ice creams for the kids! Decided not to get wound up - the food was ok and he wasn't rude (just disinterested in his work) and we were away to enjoy ourselves!

Next morning thought we might have breakfast at the Abbey Grange hotel as there were signs for all day breakfast. Tried three doors and all were shut, but could see people eating breakfast inside. Eventually went to the cafe on the Abbey Farm campsite down the road - totally different feel. Greeted by a "Welcome please come in sign" and an open door - breakfast was very good and staff great too. If camping in Llangollen again will go for this site (it looked much busier which might be because it's so much nicer).

The worst thing of all was the other campers on the site - there was no consideration towards others. There were only about 8 tents per night on the site but the three tents closest to us quickly made friends and got together each night playing "boom boom" music until well into the early hours and did nothing but drink despite all having young children with them. One of them had a very interesting tale of his past to tell (couldn't help but overhear a loud, bragging conversation well past midnight on the first night boasting of his past "activities") - needless to say when one of my sons was invited by one of theirs to join the party on the second night we said no! It was truly depressing that they were in such a beautiful part of the world with so much for children to see and explore and they just stayed on the campsite all day drinking and leaving their children totally to their own devices. Know I've rambled on but my point is that the price was low and maybe that's the downside of the very good price per pitch - on the upside, went home glad to be me and happy I have the friends and family I have.

When I think back, we weren't shown a code of conduct whilst on the site. Would highly recommend that the site managers draw one up as it would have been a totally acceptable (was expecting basic) site for a couple of nights away apart from the way the others campers disturbed our stay.
