  • Off-grid Somerset farm campsite with spectacular Bristol Channel views
  • A 10-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge; 25 minutes to Weston-super-Mare
  • Grass pitches with basic facilities; five minutes’ walk to the pub
A working Somerset farm. Bristol Channel views. Back-to-basics family camping. Sounds like what you’re looking for? Here at Swallow Barn Farm, there's also a traditional country pub (with plenty of outdoor seating for balmy days) a mere five minutes’ stroll away. Grass pitches here are spacious, on sloping land and have spectacular views over Somerset countryside to the sea. Basic facilities include a single portable toilet; there is no electricity, however, so remember the torches for late-night wanderings around the site. Barbecues are allowed by the pitches, and you can pick up bits and pieces from the local essentials shop (10 minutes’ walk). A more extensively stocked store and garage is five minutes’ drive away. The site is 10 minutes’ walk from Rowberrow Forest and 15 minutes’ drive from the Mendip Hills National Landscape for hikes and cycle rides. You are welcome to bring your dogs to join in all the walkies fun, but please keep them under control when on site as there is livestock in adjacent fields.

What customers say

A quiet, back-to-basics spot with awesome views, especially sunsets. Plenty of room and close to the pub. Basic loos and a tap, but great value and natural surrounds. Great for walks and chilling, despite a few sloped bits and dogs.

The check in and check out times are just amazing and just adds that something special! Everyone was really friendly, the views are lovely and the pub (less that a 1 min walk from the farms entrance) is beautiful- will definitely be back! (Probably next weekend!)

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Clean quiet (on the whole)and safe, walks from the site, mostly like minded campers enjoying the peace and quiet and sunset views over the Bristol channel . Adequate toilet facilities, always well stocked

Disliked Larger groups tend to forget that it's a shared space and that their "conversation" is of no interest to the other campers....

Liked Simple and beautiful. I just took myself away for the evening with the van, shared the field with one other person and watched the sunset. It was glorious. The view is fabulous.
No thrills, a field with a view and a couple of portaloos. Perfect.
I live only 20 mins away, and I feel this is somewhere I will be returning a lot for when I need the head space!

From the manager: Thank you so much for a wonderful review, you captured the whole ethos of the place, definitely somewhere to come for head space. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

Local attractions

Spectacular landscapes are everywhere in this corner of Somerset, and you can admire the Mendip Hills National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) on foot or by bike. Try the Blackdown Hills National Landscape (50 minutes) for hikes to the Norman-era Castle Neroche and nearby Iron Age remains (55 minutes), or go hiking, climbing and caving in dramatic Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes). For more subterranean explorations, take the kids on tours of the caverns at Wookey Hole Caves (25 minutes); once back above ground, follow the animatronic dinosaur trail. Need to keep everyone busy? Get out on the dry ski slope at Mendip Activity Centre (five minutes), or join in bouts of archery and games of frisbee golf – if you fancy a round of the real thing, head to the 18-hole course 15 minutes’ drive away. If the weather’s good, you might consider piling everyone in the car and heading to the popular beach at Weston-super-Mare (25 minutes) for a dip in the Bristol Channel, or Uphill Sands (half an hour) for kitesurfing and sand yachting. The family-friendly beach at Burnham-on-Sea (25 minutes) is the spot for building sandcastles and paddling in shallow waves.
