Spacious camping field

  • Off-grid Somerset farm campsite with spectacular Bristol Channel views
  • A 10-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge; 25 minutes to Weston-super-Mare
  • Grass pitches with basic facilities; five minutes’ walk to the pub
A working Somerset farm. Bristol Channel views. Back-to-basics family camping. Sounds like what you’re looking for? Here at Swallow Barn Farm, there's also a traditional country pub (with plenty of outdoor seating for balmy days) a mere five minutes’ stroll away. Grass pitches here are spacious, on sloping land and have spectacular views over Somerset countryside to the sea. Basic facilities include a single portable toilet; there is no electricity, however, so remember the torches for late-night wanderings around the site. Barbecues are allowed by the pitches, and you can pick up bits and pieces from the local essentials shop (10 minutes’ walk). A more extensively stocked store and garage is five minutes’ drive away. The site is 10 minutes’ walk from Rowberrow Forest and 15 minutes’ drive from the Mendip Hills National Landscape for hikes and cycle rides. You are welcome to bring your dogs to join in all the walkies fun, but please keep them under control when on site as there is livestock in adjacent fields.

What customers say

Peaceful, back-to-basics spot with loads of space & great rural views, known for sunsets. Basic portaloos & water tap are fine for short stays. Quiet, good for walks, near a pub. Great value for a chilled, no-frills escape.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Traditional field site with lovely views.
Lots & lots of space.
A couple of portacabins, a few water taps (not sure how many), & bins.
The Swan Inn a few yards down the lane.
Great location

Disliked Tap’s not clearly identified as drinking or non drinking - turned out to be drinking.
Not much shelter from aggressive sun.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Space, peace and quiet, tents are not on top of each other. Also quiet enough halfway June, lovely horses in the fields next to us. Very basic facilities, just a field, a portaloo and a tap with a sink. Nice pub with friendly service is a 3 min walk. Plenty of walks from the campsite, no need for a car. Shipham is a 15 min walk away and has a butcher plus shop. And the views!

Disliked A few trees in the field would be nice

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for a great review. You actually read my mind about the trees, it’s been something we’ve talked about. Hopefully soon!

Liked Huge field and they only allow 20 pitches so lots of space. Children friendly and everyone is very respectful if they have dogs. Great walks in rowberrow warren a few minutes away without getting in the car.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Second stay at this site, exploring the surrounding area and nearby forest with my dog .
This site is very clean and well maintained. The porta loo was very clean and well stocked with essential items. The views are excellent whether enjoying your evening drinks and food as the sun sets or early morning cuppa.....there are two pubs very close by , walking distance, offering food and good quality beer if self catering isn't for you.
There was plenty of room for privacy and I found the other campers to be courteous and quiet. If you have a camp "bin" ensure it has a lid or is emptied at night due to scavenging wildlife. Good natured owner and friendly locals. planning to return.

From the manager: Thank you for a great review, apologies for the Portaloo situation, we do have two at busy times and we misjudged it this weekend. Hope it didn’t spoil your stay too much.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Lots of space and a lovely location. Great pubs nearby and really quiet!

Disliked Not a dislike- more toilets/ permanent toilets in the future would make this perfect. But given the price and location you really cant complain about anything!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for a great review. The toilets are always something we assess but we have to weigh up the cost against raising prices. I understand the toilets aren’t ideal but I can assure we are constantly reviewing this. Glad you enjoyed the peace, and the pubs!

Local attractions

Spectacular landscapes are everywhere in this corner of Somerset, and you can admire the Mendip Hills National Landscape (15 minutes’ drive) on foot or by bike. Try the Blackdown Hills National Landscape (50 minutes) for hikes to the Norman-era Castle Neroche and nearby Iron Age remains (55 minutes), or go hiking, climbing and caving in dramatic Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes). For more subterranean explorations, take the kids on tours of the caverns at Wookey Hole Caves (25 minutes); once back above ground, follow the animatronic dinosaur trail. Need to keep everyone busy? Get out on the dry ski slope at Mendip Activity Centre (five minutes), or join in bouts of archery and games of frisbee golf – if you fancy a round of the real thing, head to the 18-hole course 15 minutes’ drive away. If the weather’s good, you might consider piling everyone in the car and heading to the popular beach at Weston-super-Mare (25 minutes) for a dip in the Bristol Channel, or Uphill Sands (half an hour) for kitesurfing and sand yachting. The family-friendly beach at Burnham-on-Sea (25 minutes) is the spot for building sandcastles and paddling in shallow waves.
