General

  • Dog-friendly family-run wild camping site on the Isle of Portland
  • One kilometre from the Jurassic coast; a 20-minute drive from Weymouth
  • Farm animals on the site; food shop, pubs and beaches nearby

From paddleboarding and sea kayaking to chasing the South West Coast Path over clifftops, Hallett’s Rural Campsite will pave the way to the Isle of Portland’s Jurassic coast. And it’s certainly full-on seaside here, as the family-run, dog-friendly wild camping site is half an hour’s walk from the nearest cove and 20 minutes’ drive from Weymouth’s chirpy beachfront. That means you’ll be set, whether you’ve got your mind on climbing and coasteering on the coast or simply hanging around seaside towns.

Bring along a barbecue or hire a firepit, as both are permitted on site. The facilities are kept fairly simple (this includes an amenities block), as the site is fitted for wild camping… and there are farm animals around the site that children are likely to dote on.

Those of you who are barbecue keen might want to grab your buns and the important fillers from a couple of food shops within 10 minutes’ walk of the site. There are bus stops close by that will get you further afield, but happily, most amenities are within ten minutes’ walk of the site, including pubs, bakeries, cafés and fish and chip shops.

For a pretty backdrop while you tuck right into your fish and chips, perhaps one of the nearby beaches might be your cup of tea. There’s Church Ope Cove (half an hour’s walk) or Little Beach (35 minutes), both stops along the South West Coast Path.

We loved the owners friendly attitude and the super chilled atmosphere. Its a field with toilets & running water (we didn't even expect that!) but sometimes that's all that is needed. The site is walking distance to the Bill and Church Ope Cove. Loved it and will be back!

Great phone signal on site too!

    Disliked:

No dislikes with regards to the site!

However, we do wish other dog owners would be mindful when leaving their dogs off leash. We do our best to ensure our large lively dog doesn't upset other people by keeping him on leash on site, but it can be very difficult when curious wandering dogs pop over to say hi, or owners constantly throwing balls and he gets bouncy. This isn't exclusive to this site by any means! Just a general moan :)

Busy but plenty of space, they didn't jam loads of tents on top of you. Toilet block functional, we hired firepit and logs which was an added benefit. Location is walking distance to 2 shops, very dog friendly, water station useful for showering off the dog!

    Disliked:

All dogs other than ours were off lead, doesn't seem sensible especially with children around. We left at 6am as people camping behind us had a baby which didn't sleep through the night (which we guessed when they arrived, he was under a year old)

Everything. Easy to find with SatNav. Picked a spot to pitch and friendly owners came up to take remaining balance. Was quiet for a Bank Holiday but there’s plenty of fields if it’s peak. Pitch was flat. No showers but there are toilets and water for washing and drinking. I’m with Three Mobile and signal was good. Chip shop, pizza and pub 5 minutes walk away. The fish and chips were excellent. I walked to Portland Bill Lighthouse in about an hour. Stunning views from the cliffs. Camp site is a working farm and there are animals to look at. I saw emu type birds, poultry and pigs. Very quiet at night. I’ll be back next year.

Local attractions

This is the Jurassic coast and that means beaches, cliffs and coastal walks are on a whole other level… you might want to dive right down to Durdle Door (50 minutes) for the iconic photo spot or a picnic with the stone arch view. This area is quite unique for its historic holes all around the coast, from the fossil collection in Portland Museum (20 minutes’ walk) and the gun platforms at Portland Castle (five minutes’ drive) to the historic sea fort at Nothe Fort (20 minutes).

History’s strong inland too and that’s certainly the case at Maiden Castle (35 minutes), one of the hugest Iron Age hillforts in all of Europe. Dorchester’s got its own thing going on (35 minutes) – mainly museums, mummy replicas and Thomas Hardy’s 19th-century home.

Now, those of you who have a soft spot for the little pleasures might want to head towards Fantasy Island (25 minutes) for a funfair-style outing, or perhaps the SEA LIFE Centre Weymouth (25 minutes) for an aquarium and adventure park.

Nature’s all about too, especially at Abbotsbury Swannery (half an hour), where a colony of nesting swans reside or at Kingston Maurward Animal Park and Gardens (35 minutes), where there’s a lake and animal park.

Must see

  • Radipole Lake Nature Reserve (8.7 kilometres)
  • Weymouth Sea Life Park and Marine Sanctuary (9.7 kilometres)
  • Lulworth Heritage Centre (16.1 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Max Gate (19.0 kilometres)
  • Hardy's Cottage (21.5 kilometres)
