From paddleboarding and sea kayaking to chasing the South West Coast Path over clifftops, Hallett’s Rural Campsite will pave the way to the Isle of Portland’s Jurassic coast. And it’s certainly full-on seaside here, as the family-run, dog-friendly wild camping site is half an hour’s walk from the nearest cove and 20 minutes’ drive from Weymouth’s chirpy beachfront. That means you’ll be all set for seaside times, whether you’ve got your mind on climbing and coasteering or simply stretching out on the beach. Bring along a barbecue or hire a firepit, as both are permitted on site. It's all about the wild camping vibe, so facilities are kept fairly simple, but there is an amenities block – and the atmosphere is boosted by farm animals around the site that children are likely to dote on. A couple of food shops are within 10 minutes’ walk of the site for burgers and buns. There are bus stops close by that will get you further afield – but happily most amenities are within 10 minutes’ walk of the site, including pubs, bakeries, cafés and fish and chip shops. For a pretty backdrop while you tuck right into your fish and chips, perhaps one of the nearby beaches might be your cup of tea. Church Ope Cove (half an hour’s walk) and Little Beach (35 minutes), both accessed via the South West Coast Path are a couple of excellent options.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Quiet area with plenty of space. Facilities were great- Showers and toilets are kept clean & there’s an outdoor water tap to fill up bottles/water jugs etc. The campsite is well located & easy to find. I had a lovely experience staying there whilst climbing up Portland for the weekend.

Liked That you can choose where to pitch up,
Quiet at night time.
It wasn’t porta loos.

It was a last minute trip for me and my 10 year old and we didn’t need a lot other than a toilet and shower and it had just that. Just a very standard field.
I kinda wish we booked there other sight on the cliff edge with views.

Disliked The location.

Liked Nice flat ground, welcoming owners. Very cheap and easy to get to and pitch up. Quiet location. I had a good nights sleep. Having a bar open for drinks and cocktails was a surprise and is very nice. Vending machine also a great idea and contents reasonably priced. You can also rent a campfire setup and logs which is good. Easy to get to a local coop or fish and chip takeaway by walking. Signal is good (has 5g). Nice array of farm animals nearby to see.

Disliked Only one urinal and one stall for the men. One sink in the mens for say personal washing etc is a bit lacking given the number of people on site. You couldn't really have a shave and tie it up for everyone. However they are nicer facilities than many other sites.

Showers are apparently only operational during the daylight hours but seem to work anyway. Would be a bit annoying if they were not working later in the evening.

Could really do with some better signage for the fresh water supply, and maybe somewhere for people to wash up pots and pans. All you have is a tap with a short bit of hose on the end of the shower block.

Liked I chose this site last minute for my first time camping as it wasn’t too far from home.
Having always been a hotel person, I wasn’t sure if I would even like camping.
I found the hosts to be great, extremely helpful and friendly. Asked several times over the time I was there if I was okay.
It was quiet and other campers were friendly.
Toilet and showers were clean. Very calm atmosphere with some cute animals in the areas over the hedges (I’ve never been an ‘animal person!).
Ostriches, peacocks, goats, sheep and a cow and her calf.
Great walks around if you like walking.
I was just happy to sit and while away the day with a glass of wine and trying out my stove.
There were picnic benches to sit on and have a chat, fire pits for note and could buy logs on site.
I would go back just for the peace and quiet.
Lots to do on the area. You’ll run out of time!

Local attractions

This is the Jurassic Coast and that means beaches, cliffs and coastal walks are on a whole other level… you might want to dive right down to Durdle Door (50 minutes) for the iconic photo spot or a picnic with the stone arch view. This area is well known for variety all along the coast, from the fossil collection in Portland Museum (20 minutes’ walk) and the gun platforms at Portland Castle (five minutes’ drive) to the historic sea fort at Nothe Fort (20 minutes). History’s strong inland too and that’s certainly the case at Maiden Castle (35 minutes), one of the hugest Iron Age hillforts in all of Europe. Dorchester (35 minutes) has its own thing going on – mainly museums, mummy replicas and Thomas Hardy’s 19th-century home. Those of you in search of ways to entertain the family might want to head towards Fantasy Island (25 minutes) for a funfair-style outing, or perhaps the SEA LIFE Centre Weymouth (25 minutes) for an aquarium and adventure park. Nature’s all about too, especially at Abbotsbury Swannery (half an hour), where a colony of nesting swans reside or at Kingston Maurward Animal Park and Gardens (35 minutes), where there’s a lake and animal park.
