The beautiful lake

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches and a modern shower block on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open Friday to Sunday) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

What customers say

Litton Lakes gets a thumbs up for its stunning spot, helpful staff, and roomy sites. The lake's a winner for a dip or paddle, with the cafe and local pub scoring well too. Facilities are mostly tidy, though a few mentioned water pressure woes and dim loos. While most dig the chill vibe, some found it a bit too bustling or loud, especially with bigger crowds. Everyone agrees the toilets and showers could do with a spruce-up.

Liked Really friendly welcome and the facilities were clean and modern but still had a campsite rural charm. The lake was obviously the main feature and we had beautiful weather. The car was really chilled. Pitches were nice and flat and the other guests were all respectful and the site had lovely views.

Disliked There was a lot of floating algae in the lake which in my mind could have been cleared, I understand that it provides oxygen and a platoon for creatures but nonetheless there was a lot of it. The options available in the cafe were limited, essentially a bacon sandwich or toasted sandwich’s only. It did take a while to receive my coffee too, despite there being few customers.

Liked Lovely site with friendly greeting from staff on arrival. Beautiful pleasure lake and decent facilities. So much joy and laugher in the air, mainly from older kids, really nice to have something to do for this age range (mostly 8-14 I recon).

Disliked Cafe was over priced and not serving food until 10am. Bit too late for breakfast for us. Would prefer a simpler set up serving good coffee and bacon sarnies from 8am. It was all very nice and fancy, but not really what we needed in the morning.

Liked Wow what a beautiful place.
The pitches were perfect with plenty of space to accomodate the caravan, car and for us to sit out.
The facilities were great, you have everything you need, loos, sinks, showers and washing up space, and hot water!
We are a family of 3 with a teenage daughter and we loved the slow pace and having the lake at our fingertips all day was wonderful.
Our dog loved it! Theres a fabulous dog walking field onsite, he was allowed to swim in the lake too, so was living his best life everday! He was on lead in all other spaces around the site.
The onsite cafe is fabulous, the food and drinks were soooo nice and the staff were all very lovely.
The onsite guys (sorry didnt get names) were great, and so helpful if you needed anything.
They supply amazing firepits which you can rent and purchase logs and kindling, it was a wonderful addition for the evenings.

Disliked Not a dislike at all more of a heads up!
The shower block does run low on pressure at times, which is to be expected when others are washing and flushing, so just have patience and the water will flow.

Liked Amazing site. We have been to the area many times but 1st visit to Litton Lakes.

Lovely sized pitches, plenty of loos, showers and lovely staff.

The lake and cafe were such a bonus. Kids loved paddle boarding and swimming around.

We liked it so much we stayed and extra night as just didn't want to go home.

10mins walk away is a lovely pub. Friendly welcome and great food.

Only thing that would have topped it off would have been a small kids playground but that's being greedy

Disliked Showers can be a bit hit or miss. Showers close to the cafe great pressure..larger shower block a bit more of a struggle. Not an issue for us thought

Liked From the moment we got out of the car to check in we were met friendly staff, the location was amazing, loved the cafe the food was excellent, pitches were flat and a good size, and of course the lake, we will be booking next year as we enjoyed it.

Disliked The only thing that wasn’t so good was the showers as the water pressure was down, however we were informed of this when we arrived and it wouldn’t stop us coming back.

Unpowered grass site

Liked The setting- in the shelter of low lying hills, flat pitches, big skies, and of course the lake… a huge draw for swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking. A nice cafe on site, and in walking distance to the pub. Just about the perfect place. West bay is nearby and Bridport for the farmers market.

Disliked Ok… the water pressure in the shower block is a problem. My last shower was a very small dribble of water that ran down the shower stand and only one tap worked in the hand washing area.

Liked Most beautiful location and friendly staff.
The lake was great for SUP and the children loved jumping in.
The deluxe hot chocolate from the cafe is to die for.
We loved the field that the children could play on as well as our tent over looked it.

Disliked The shower water pressure was a bit low and the hot water a bit hit and miss.
But this didn’t spoil our time here.

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
