General

  • Quiet, family-friendly and rural site in a wildlife haven
  • Spectacular countryside views
  • Firepits for guests' use and two large barbecues available to hire

Your little critters will blossom at Primrose Fields in Dorset. This small and friendly site close to the River Frome and just outside Wareham is only about a mile from famed ape rescue centre Monkey World: lots of fun to be had comparing family members with apeish inhabitants, of course...

The site's also in prime setting for settling down in a peaceful place, as it's in a rural wildlife haven and has heaps to do nearby without bothering with a car. There's woodland for kids to rummage around in, nature spot, den build or – your fave, no doubt – collect bugs and other small critters, and there's plenty of open space for small sorts to run around too.

Pitches at Primrose Fields aren't set, so you can make your camp either in the paddock or in the open woodland. Walkers, cyclists, watersporters, tents, campervans, couples, families and kids are all welcome on site.

Campfires are allowed within firepits, with sustainably sourced wood and charcoal available to buy. For food and supplies, nearby Wareham has a good selection of shops, cafés and pubs, while the modern and spacious Black Dog Inn is a hop over a stile away.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 3 people or more people under 21 years old are not permitted via Pitchup.com

Please note: the facilities are portable toilets and showers. No facility for emptying chemical toilets.

Firewood is available on site at £6 a bag.

Plenty of BBQs available to use for free and cheap coal and firewood available to buy on site.
Good amount of space for our big group to pitch up on and not feel like we were too close to anybody.
The portaloos were nice and clean.
Nice surrounding area but would definitely recommend having a car to get around!

Unfortunately due to weather we had to leave a day early but of course this is no fault to the campsite- it just means I can't comment on the shower facilities!

It was a lovely spot. So close to the main attractions for the Jurassic coast.
The host is lovely and the facilities are great for a superb “wild camping”.
The walk through the woods is very relaxing and it’s a short cut to the pub.
    We will stay again soon.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around this Wareham-based site, including many options without even having to fire up the car engine: the Frome Valley Trail is close to hand and the quiet country lanes around these parts are just the ticket for gentle cycling. The Bovington Tank Museum and the Jurassic Coast are both easily accessible from the site.

Take a picnic or a catch of local fish and chips down to the grassy riverbank opposite the quay in Wareham for a restful afternoon, or wander around the town's Saxon defence walls for views in all directions. Another good walk is the Two Rivers one down to the backwaters of Poole Harbour, but if you’d rather get out on the water than look at it, you can hire a canoe, kayak or paddleboard for lazy drifting up the Frome.

If you do decide to drive, the fab beaches, countryside and attractions of Purbeck and West Dorset are a short distance away. There's also the birdwatching and nature spotting of the RSPB Arne nature reserve just south of Wareham; splendid old Corfe Castle a 10-minute drive from there, and a steam train from the castle surrounds to the seaside resort and sandy beach of Swanage. North of Swanage is the sandy National Trust-managed Studland Bay.

Must see
