Primrose Fields: The forest edge is a popular spot to pitch up in

General

  • Quiet, family-friendly and rural site in a wildlife haven
  • Spectacular countryside views
  • Firepits for guests' use and two large barbecues available to hire

Your little critters will blossom at Primrose Fields in Dorset. This small and friendly site close to the River Frome and just outside Wareham is only about a mile from famed ape rescue centre Monkey World: lots of fun to be had comparing family members with apeish inhabitants, of course…

The site's also in prime setting for settling down in a peaceful place, as it's in a rural wildlife haven and has heaps to do nearby without bothering with a car. There's woodland for kids to rummage around in, nature spot, den build or – your fave, no doubt – collect bugs and other small critters, and there's plenty of open space for small sorts to run around too.

Pitches at Primrose Fields aren't set, so you can make your camp anywhere in the wildlife meadow, picking a spot by the forest or one with heathland views. Walkers, cyclists, watersporters, tents, campervans, couples, families and kids are all welcome on site.

Campfires are allowed within firepits, with sustainably sourced wood and charcoal available to buy. For food and supplies, nearby Wareham has a good selection of shops, cafés and pubs, while the Black Dog Inn is within walking distance.

Please note

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of three people or more people under 21 years old are not permitted via Pitchup.com

Firewood, kindling and charcoal can be brought from home or bought on site. Wood can't be taken from the countryside.

Lovely spaced out site, simple but adequate facilities which were clean with plenty of hot water for showers and washing.
    Friendly site owner.
Level pitches, campfires allowed on firepits (provided).
Local pub is basic and not always open (according to the landlady). Simple pub basket meals as limited food option. Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

One slightly noisy group of Scouts who did not seem to care about respecting noise levels after 11pm and early at 7am.

This is our ideal kind of campsite. Not too developed, but had simple and clean efficient facilities. Some parts of the field had been left for the grass to grow a little longer and look pretty, while the parts where one would want to pitch a tent were cut shorter. The owners were very friendly and helpful, and seemed genuinely keen that we enjoyed our stay. We'll be coming again in the future.

Don’t want to say too much as I don’t want it to be full when I go back. The pub is just next door. Excellent customer service.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around this Wareham-based site, including many options without even having to fire up the car engine: the Frome Valley Trail is close to hand and the quiet country lanes around these parts are just the ticket for gentle cycling. The Bovington Tank Museum and the Jurassic Coast are both easily accessible from the site.

Take a picnic or a catch of local fish and chips down to the grassy riverbank opposite the quay in Wareham for a restful afternoon, or wander around the town's Saxon defence walls for views in all directions. Another good walk is the Two Rivers route down to the backwaters of Poole Harbour, but if you’d rather get out on the water than look at it, you can hire a canoe, kayak or paddleboard for lazy drifting up the Frome.

If you do decide to drive, the fab beaches, countryside and attractions of Purbeck and West Dorset are a short distance away. There's also the birdwatching and nature spotting of the RSPB Arne nature reserve just south of Wareham; splendid old Corfe Castle a 10-minute drive from there, and a steam train from the castle surrounds to the seaside resort and sandy beach of Swanage. North of Swanage is the sandy National Trust-managed Studland Bay.
