- Quiet, family-friendly and rural site in a wildlife haven
- Spectacular countryside views
- Firepits for guests' use and two large barbecues available to hire
Your little critters will blossom at Primrose Fields in Dorset. This small and friendly site beside Hethfelton Forest just outside Wareham is only about a mile from famed ape rescue centre Monkey World: lots of fun to be had comparing family members with apeish inhabitants, of course...
The site's also in prime setting for settling down among nature in a peaceful place, as it's in a rural wildlife haven and has heaps to do nearby without bothering with a car. There's woodland for kids to rummage around in, nature spot, den build or – your fave, no doubt – collect bugs and other small critters; and there's plenty of open space for small sorts to run around.
Pitches at Primrose Fields aren't set, so you can make your camp either in the paddock or in the open woodland. Walkers, cyclists, watersporters, tents, campervans, couples, families and kids are all welcome.
Campfires are allowed within firepits, with sustainably sourced wood and charcoal available to buy on site. For food and supplies, nearby Wareham has a good selection of shops, cafés and pubs, while the modern and spacious Black Dog Inn is a hop over a stile away.

Many parks set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per site, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 sites.
However, where the campsite or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple sites or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be located together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click 'Make another booking like this' at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.
Large groups: check the listing page for any group restrictions set out in the terms and section titled ‘Please note’.
Large tents/caravans: check the restrictions on unit dimensions to ensure your unit is suitable for the space you will be provided with.

What a lot there is to do around this Wareham-based site, including many options without even having to fire up the car engine: miles of walking tracks are all around Hethfelton Forest and the quiet country lanes around these parts are just the ticket for gentle cycling. The Bovington Tank Museum and the Jurassic Coast are both easily accessible from the site.
Take a picnic or a catch of local fish and chips down to the grassy riverbank opposite the quay in Wareham for a restful afternoon, or wander around the town's Saxon defence walls for views in all directions.
Another good walk is the Two Rivers one down to the backwaters of Poole Harbour, but if you’d rather get out on the water than look at it, you can hire a canoe, kayak or paddleboard for lazy drifting up the River Frome.
If you do decide to drive, the fab beaches, countryside and attractions of Purbeck and West Dorset are a short distance away. There's also the birdwatching and nature spotting of the RSPB Arne nature reserve just south of Wareham; splendid old Corfe Castle a ten-minute drive from there, and a steam train from the castle surrounds to the seaside resort and sandy beach of Swanage. North of Swanage is the sandy National Trust-managed Studland Bay.
Drive west from Swanage for some spectacular coastline starting at Durlston Country Park, past Dancing Ledge with its puffin colony and plunge pool cut into the rock, and then on to Seacombe, Winspit and St Aldhelms Head: the Primrose Fields team reckon all this is best combined with a cider brewed by Charlie on site and a homemade pasty at the Square and Compass at Worth Matravers (there's a fossil museum here too).
Finally, if you're up for some cycling, get along to the mix of off-road trails and quiet back lanes around Purbeck, or the quiet family-friendly Sika Trail in Wareham Forest. Purbeck Cycle Hire at Wareham station provides a detailed map of suggested routes in the area.
