General

  • Small-scale family-run site with scenic Devon views
  • A 10-minute drive to Bigbury beach; 20 minutes to Salcombe
  • Pub and award-winning seafood restaurant within walking distance

You’ll have the seaside, the South West Coast Path and the whole of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at your disposal when you stay at Higher Easton Farm Campsite, a lovely little spot just outside Bigbury and about 15 minutes’ drive from Kingsbridge.

This is a most handy location for exploring this stunning stretch of the Devon coastline: it’s a two-mile trip to Bigbury beach (for a surf school, kayak hire and instruction in the art of paddleboarding) and there are lots of other fine spots within a 20-minute drive, including Salcombe, Hope Cove and Bantham and Wonwell beaches. All of these are of course linked by the coast path for scenic hikes, and there are more trails half an hour’s drive away in Dartmoor.

And the owners quite rightly note that it’s also a handy location for some great Devon eats: the award-winning Oyster Shack is a mile away, and there’s a great fish and chip shop on the seafront in Challaborough (two miles away). Closer to home, it’s a five-minute walk to the local pub or the well-stocked village store, where you can pick up picnic supplies or bits to go on your barbecue.

As you’d imagine, there’s some fine scenery around here – and with far-reaching views from the site you can take in a fair amount without moving from your pitch. It’s worth staying awake past sunset too, as the stargazing tends to be pretty good on a clear night.

Pitches at Higher Easton Farm are simple in style, but have access to showers and proper toilets.

Welcoming host, quiet campsite, hot showers.
We were really delighted that we booked Higher Easton Farm. We had a lovely welcome when we arrived (having been texted the directions) and it had everything you need - and nothing else. It's a great location and we'll be back.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but there are plans to add an ice block freezer, which would definitely encourage us to extend our stay.

Good views, pitches as big as required, free to pitch where you want. Low cost.

    Disliked:

Facilities not very private, very much a few toilets within poor quality sheds. No lighting and no toilet roll in 2 of the cubicles. Huge gaps above and under doors. Recycling in open boxes outside the facilities with a bad smell. Other pitches playing music until beyond 11 o clock at night, no intervention of this. Grass very hard and uncomfortable to pitch upon after drought. Places to eat nearby are very far and few between, local pub fully booked on day of arrival, so would need to know when and where to eat before actually arriving. Local shop very expensive with not much camp friendly food.

Peace and tranquility at its best with stunning countryside views and on a clear night sky perfect for stargazing. A no frills site with basic but clean facilities. The owners were lovely and friendly and couldn't do enough to make your stay enjoyable. The field was so big and there was enough space to be as far away from your neighbour as you wish, you could choose your pitch. Nice level pitches, no need for ramps. If you like peace and quiet then this site is perfect, and just a short drive from Bigbury on Sea / Kingsbridge and conveniently location for Salcombe.

    Disliked:

There was quite a few flys as it was warm but its a working farm so there is going to be - they calmed down at night.

Loved this farm and the family where very friendly and helpful. Nice flat pitch. Beautiful views, lots of calf’s which where cute and it’s a peaceful site. Toilets are basic but are very clean and shower nice and hot. I liked the rustic charm of the showers next to apple tree and listening to the cows whilst washing my hair 🐄. Boys enjoyed playing football and collecting blackberries. Nice spa shop close by with everything you need, ten minutes drive to beach and brilliant reception on your phone. Must also say the night sky is amazing - the most stars I’ve ever seen!

Another great holiday at Higher Easton farm. This is the second year we have stayed here. We considered going to another part of the country but as the holiday was so good last year we went back. If you want a rustic campsite with basic facilities then this is perfect. No electric (great the kids cant use phones) flushing toilets' (much better than compost or portaloos) and two free showers unlike some other sites that charge.
Nothing to dislike but don't expect modern facilities the toilets are huts and the showers are outdoor, both clean and well maintained. This is good old fashioned peaceful camping to enjoy nature, the stars and fresh air.
The site is a short drive to Bigbury on Sea one of the best beaches in the country, perfect for water sports such as kayaking and paddle boarding. There is also a pub on Burgh Island, what more could you ask for?

Traditional camp site very clean and quiet but close to all amenities.

    Disliked:

Only dislike was a unusual noise sounded like a turbine from a plane that ran all night on the Friday from a neighbouring field would be good to understand what it was as it kept us awake most of the first night

From the manager...

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a review, we are very pleased you enjoyed it here and hope you visit again.
The noise was a neighbouring farmer combining his corn, because we haven't had much rain this summer and very high temperatures the moisture content of the corn nationally has been too low in the day time and this is why this year farmers have been combining (harvesting) all night. Thank you for letting me explain because this would only happen next to this Campsite one night a year at most.

Local attractions

If you’d like to dabble in some watersports, you’ve come to the right area – Bigbury (10 minutes’ drive) has a sheltered side and one with wilder waves so it’s a place where you can learn to surf or paddleboard your way across calmer waters. Rather stick to dry land? There’s a golf course in the village too.

While you’re in Bigbury, take a trip over to Burgh Island, famed for its wildlife and its links to Agatha Christie. You can walk across the causeway at low tide, or take a ride on the sea tractor at other times.

Elsewhere along the coast, make a stop in smart Salcombe (20 minutes) for a tour of Overbeck’s (National Trust) and a sip of the local gin, or venture to Dartmouth (35 minutes) to see its ancient castle and stroll around the harbour.

For a family day out away from the beach, try Woodlands Family Theme Park (25 minutes), Dartmoor Zoo (half an hour) or the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth (40 minutes).

  • Dartmoor Zoological Park (14.1 kilometres)
  • National Marine Aquarium (19.5 kilometres)
