Higher Easton Farm Campsite: Wembury Beach looking towards the Mew Stone

General

  • Small-scale family-run site with scenic Devon views
  • A 10-minute drive to Bigbury beach; 20 minutes to Salcombe
  • Pub and award-winning seafood restaurant within walking distance

You’ll have the seaside, the South West Coast Path and the whole of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at your disposal when you stay at Higher Easton Farm Campsite, a lovely little spot just outside Bigbury and about 15 minutes’ drive from Kingsbridge.

This is a most handy location for exploring this stunning stretch of the Devon coastline: it’s a two-mile trip to Bigbury beach (for a surf school, kayak hire and instruction in the art of paddleboarding) and there are lots of other fine spots within a 20-minute drive, including Salcombe, Hope Cove and Bantham and Wonwell beaches. All of these are of course linked by the coast path for scenic hikes, and there are more trails half an hour’s drive away in Dartmoor.

And the owners quite rightly note that it’s also a handy location for some great Devon eats: the award-winning Oyster Shack is a mile away, and there’s a great fish and chip shop on the seafront in Challaborough (two miles away). Closer to home, it’s a five-minute walk to the local pub or the well-stocked village store, where you can pick up picnic supplies or bits to go on your barbecue.

As you’d imagine, there’s some fine scenery around here – and with far-reaching views from the site you can take in a fair amount without moving from your pitch. It’s worth staying awake past sunset too, as the stargazing tends to be pretty good on a clear night.

Pitches at Higher Easton Farm are simple in style, but have access to showers and proper toilets.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

We are a working farm, please do not enter farm buildings and do not touch farm machinery.

This was a lovely, peaceful campsite set in beautiful open farm land. It was very reasonably priced. The family who run it were really friendly and amenable. My children loved watching a tractor pick up bales of hay in the field that our tent was in.

The facilities (toilets, showers and washing up area) were all kept really clean and in good working order but were fairly basic - which we we happy with but might put some off. It is in short driving distance of some excellent beaches. Locally to the campsite there is a well stocked local shop. There was also a nearby pub in walking distance, but we didn't try it out this time. We are definitely planning on visiting again.

Fantastic site, quiet with lovely facilities and a superb view! What more could you want? Walking distance to the pub and shop and less than 10 minute drive to the beach. Ideal for families, couples or singles. Hazel and Stuart are welcoming and friendly hosts. As a single female I felt safe and secure. I will definitely be back, unbelievable value for money. I’m sure the prices will be going up as the site becomes more known.

This beautiful campsite is an ideal base to explore South Devon. The views are stunning and it was very peaceful. Hazel and Stuart were wonderful hosts and sent us a warm welcome and clear directions to find the farm before we arrived. They were both friendly and very helpful with information about the local area. The facilities were clean and perfect for our needs. We did some beautiful walking straight from the site. This is a working farm and it was lovely to see the hay being turned and hear the chickens and calves, a real contrast to our regular life. Thank you for a wonderful relaxing stay and we hope to see you again soon.

Local attractions

If you’d like to dabble in some watersports, you’ve come to the right area – Bigbury (10 minutes’ drive) has a sheltered side and one with wilder waves so it’s a place where you can learn to surf or paddleboard your way across calmer waters. Rather stick to dry land? There’s a golf course in the village too.

While you’re in Bigbury, take a trip over to Burgh Island, famed for its wildlife and its links to Agatha Christie. You can walk across the causeway at low tide, or take a ride on the sea tractor at other times.

Elsewhere along the coast, make a stop in smart Salcombe (20 minutes) for a tour of Overbeck’s (National Trust) and a sip of the local gin, or venture to Dartmouth (35 minutes) to see its ancient castle and stroll around the harbour.

For a family day out away from the beach, try Woodlands Family Theme Park (25 minutes), Dartmoor Zoo (half an hour) or the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth (40 minutes).

Must see

  • Dartmoor Zoological Park (14.1 kilometres)
  • National Marine Aquarium (19.5 kilometres)
