  • Scenic and secluded pop-up farm site with views of the Shorwell Downs
  • A 15-minute drive from Blackgang Chine and 25 minutes from Osborne
  • Barbecues and dogs allowed; pubs, café and food shop a short walk away
Set yourself up for a scenic stay at Troopers View Campsite. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Isle of Wight, this place is all abuzz with the full-on countryside, including views over the Shorwell Downs… and while you’re on your rural wanders, you’ll find many walking and cycling trails surrounding the site. Thanks to the pretty central location on the island, you’ll be free to roam as far as you desire. Whether it’s horse riding, mountain biking, surfing or watersports you have in mind for the day, there’s a handy bus stop at the entrance to the site to get about. Plus, half an hour’s walk away in Brighstone, the neighbouring village, there are bicycle and E-bikes for hire for those of you who’d rather bike your way around and soak in the views en-route. When you’re hit by a thirst for a pint or a nice helping of food, then the site is a 10-minute walk away from a traditional country pub and a little village shop where you may track down breakfast and basics. In Brighstone, there’s a café (a hot breakfast spot), newsagents and another pub serving lunch, dinner and local ales – there’s a big beer garden here to kick back outdoors and nurse a pint while the kids scamper about in the playground. On site, there are convenient facilities including a water supply, toilet and general waste bins. This is a rather laidback place, welcoming families and dogs, and permitting barbecues so that you can get together on an evening.

What customers say

This chill, basic campsite has stunning views. Pitches can be sloping. Facilities get mixed feedback – some found them clean and hot, others not. Nearby road noise is an issue for some. Pubs and villages are a short walk away. Easy check-in is a bonus.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked It's a short stay pitch, useful for a night or two max. The drinking water on site is the most useful thing.

Disliked The pitch is small, very small and the field is bowl shape, camping only suitable around the edges. There is a hedge on three sides but the side near the road is open, which makes it quite noisy to traffic. And it has a sloping entrance which would be difficult for some vehicles especially if it gets damp. It has two showers but only one was currently working. The issue I had was on the last night, six cars arrived with 6 adults and 10 children staying in two tepee tents (that hold 4 in each) The parents spent the time drinking and the children ran riot until midnight, not the peaceful stay I was looking for. The site is just to small for such a large out of control crowd and you have no way of knowing who you are sharing the field with.

From the manager: Hello, I’m so sorry you felt the site was too small. The site is 1.5 acres and we don’t have mapped out pitches and allow our guests to use as much space as needed without intruding on your neighbours.

The current entrance is on a slope yes, however, there is a second entrance that we can open should we get rain and the ground becomes slippery. You can see the gate to that entrance in one of your photos.

I’m so sorry about the noise. We do ask guests to be quieter after 10pm. Had you alerted us to this at the time we could have come out to ask them to keep noise levels down. Although we state that 4 people can stay in each on site bell tent, we cannot guarantee that people will adhere to this. Again if you had raised this as a safety concern at the time we could have managed that.

I’m sorry you didn’t have a peaceful stay and enjoy your time like the majority of our guests do.

Liked Love the fact that we had so much freedom in the field, the children could run up and down, riding their bikes. It was just perfect.
Very reasonably priced as well.

Disliked The bolt on the shower room has not been fixed in properly. I got trapped in it. My husband had to come and rescue me.

From the manager: I’m so glad you enjoyed your stay! I’m so so sorry about the shower door! I will get on that straight away tomorrow to try and fix the problem.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Absolutely loved this site relaxed atmosphere. We chose it for our first off grid experience in our new van and it didn’t disappoint. Loved the fact they had slabs for bbqs extremely helpful, and still had some basic facilities which was great. Also loved the relaxed atmosphere for timings. We hate it when you’ve got to pack up and leave straight away.
Was very quiet in the best way. If it stays the same price we will definitely be back as don’t like to pay too much for a more wild camping experience like this.

Disliked Didn’t dislike anything anything at all - but ground was hilly so did take a little work to get level which was fine,

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked As soon as we arrived on the island, we started looking for a campsite. We were surprised to find that many places required booking at least a day in advance and had a minimum stay of two nights. Fortunately, this campsite had no such restrictions, which was an immediate plus for its simple and hassle-free check-in.

There are tall trees surrounding the site, providing plenty of natural shade from early morning until the evening. Although the campsite may look similar to many others, it has its own unique charm and cozy atmosphere.

We have nothing but great memories from our stay and would definitely recommend it.

Local attractions

To begin with the scrumptious coastline? Perhaps surfing at the National Trust’s Compton Bay (10 minutes’ drive), windsurfing or kitesurfing at the sandy Brook Bay (10 minutes) or the beach at Osborne (25 minutes), a heritage house with playgrounds and tours too? The Needles (25 minutes) might not be your classic beach day but this chalk coast is a landmark stop. And how about a daily dose of animal therapy? There are horse riding stables (15 minutes) or the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary (20 minutes). Robin Hill (20 minutes) is a country park all about falconry displays and train rides, while Tapnell Farm Park (15 minutes) will get the kids all immersed in family-friendly farm activities or the aqua park. Where else to go? For those of you still catering to the kids, there's Blackgang Chine's (15 minutes) family-friendly rides and slides or the Isle of Wight Zoo (35 minutes). Carisbrooke Castle (10 minutes) and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway (25 minutes) might ignite a passion for history. Or for something where wildlife’s rife, Isle of Wight Pearl (five minutes) has a butterfly meadow and café.
