  • Adults-only cabin in a valley just outside of the Lake District
  • A five-minute drive to Silecroft beach; located under Black Combe fell
  • Hike directly to fells and the Cumbria Coastal Way; shops nearby
Functional simplicity mixed with comfort and style… that sums up this glamping cabin based just outside of the Lake District National Park. Dog Crag Cabin is a wise base for active breaks: beaches, lakes and other south Lake District landscapes are all easy to access. So, where exactly is this cabin? On a former farm in a valley in southwest Cumbria, it’s just four miles from Millom and a five- minute drive from Silecroft Beach in the south of the national park. The Cumbria Coastal Way, which snakes its way along the Lake District coast, is nearby and can be accessed from a footpath direct from the farm. That’s coastal hikes on your itinerary already. Horse riding treks might feature too – there’s a trekking centre five minutes’ drive away. There are more hikes out onto fells or you might want to visit the local golf course (10 minutes’ drive) and go fishing in Haverigg (10 minute). Foodies will be happy to find shops and pubs within five to 10 minutes’ drive of the site too. The cabin is actually a barn conversion – through the arched door, there’s a well-designed, modern and open-plan timber interior, splendidly lit and tastefully decorated with a four-poster bed. Ensuite facilities, which include a shower, and kitchen facilities are included. Up to two pets are welcome, as are any couples or solo travellers. Whoever you bring, don’t forget to climb the often-forgotten Wainwright’s Black Combe (five minutes’ drive), which has views over the Irish Sea and the Isle of Man.

Cabin

Liked: Beautiful cabin with everything you need and more. There's even board games and books for you to use. WiFi was great as was the location, plenty of beautiful walks near by. Enjoyed watching the horses with my morning cuppa.

Cabin

Liked: Lovely conversation, really unique and had a lovely kitchen setup, was good value for money. The two heaters where more than sufficient and where warm throughout even on a cold wet March day. Wifi was good! And really dog friendly! Would recommend. Great location!

Disliked: The shower on both mornings (we only stayed 2 nights as a stop off on the way to Scotland) was freezing cold and didn't work at all, kept flashing red and going to the cold selection (not human error not sure if the shower was faulty?) if we stayed longer we probably would have mentioned it to the host but for 2 nights we just went without, we also had to buy drinking water as the drinking water tap was either to slow or didn't produce any water at all.

From the manager: Thanks for the review and glad to hear there was lots that you liked. We live on site and always happy to help with problems. On investigation we have discovered that a temporary loss of pressure caused the shower thermal cut out to be triggered which we can fix if notified, we have also changed the filter on the drinking water feed. The property is on a private water supply and we are upgrading the system to complete by end March to avoid any loss of pressure but this hasn't generally caused any issues and was a temporary problem per other reviews. Sorry we couldn't get involved to fix it for this visit. We are also introducing a dedicated patio/garden area for the Cabin in March for the Summer season, photos to follow.

Cabin

Liked: We liked it was a nice remote location. The view was beautiful. It was a lovely place to stay, with comfortable bedding and heat options so we had no reason to be cold. It has all the facilities we could have needed. We visited some of the lakes and would happily stay again to do some of the higher ground walks.

Liked: Everything. There was nothing other than the weather that we disliked. It was cosey, quaint, quiet, comfortable and have everything that we needed. The host was very friendly and helpful. Amazing views and plenty of places to visit. Fabulous food at a nearby pub. Couldn’t have asked for a better time away. Will definitely be booking again

Cabin

Liked: The cabin was amazing! So cosy! It was clean, excellent layout to have a big bathroom, kitchen and bed all in the same space, it even has WiFi (which we only used to stay in touch with family back home... It was too good to just sit on our phones the whole time). They even had the heaters on for us arriving as we stayed in January and it was cold! Amazing access to the lakes, beautiful scenery the whole experience was amazing!

Cabin

Liked: I loved everything! The space was just right: a good sized kitchen area, the bed was comfortable, there was enough seating to relax, a wee table to eat dinner at, and a lovely view into the farm. The location was also excellent as I was able to do loads of walks straight from the door without having to drive anywhere. Also: Louise, the owner, is super lovely and helpful. I had an issue with the shower and she fixed it right away!!! Will definitely be back!!

Disliked: Bring your own hot water bottle for colder nights!

Local attractions

If you’re planning to spend most of your time outdoors, good news – Grizedale Forest (55 minutes’ drive) is carved out with cycling and mountain biking trails and there are obstacle courses and zipwires slung between the treetops for the daring types. Brockhole on Windermere (55 minutes) has more on that front, especially for budding kayakers and archers. As for spots frequented by historic figures, Wordsworth Grasmere (an hour) was once occupied by poet Wordsworth and novelist Beatrix Potter lived at the Hill Top Beatrix Potter House (50 minutes) and Yew Tree Farm (35 minutes). The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (55 minutes) explores her tales in more detail. Up next, more historical places? Ambleside Roman Fort (50 minutes), Sizergh (55 minutes) or Muncaster Castle (20 minutes), perhaps? Steam train trips through a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Co.Ltd (25 minutes) or gliding across Coniston Water on a steam-powered Victorian yacht run by the National Trust’s Steam Yacht Gondola (35 minutes)? Other options for days out include the Lakes Aquarium (45 minutes), Kendal’s art galleries and museums (an hour) or Lakeland Maze Farm Park (55 minutes).
