  • Cosy family-run farm site three miles from the edge of the Cotswolds
  • Cotswold Wildlife Park five minutes’ drive; Oxford 40 minutes
  • On-site shop selling fresh produce including local honey; firepits
Cocoon down for a rather cosy stay at West End Farm Camping, three miles from the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Pitches at this small family-run site are in a grassy plot surrounded by fields grazed by animals or left to grow for hay. West End Farm is a five-minute drive from the town of Burford and the Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens, meaning that you’ll also be well connected to several local attractions. This is a rural location, so the views come in strong – the site looks over the Cotswold hills and the Ridgeway National Trail. Handily, walking and cycling paths are not far away either, and there are lots of routes leading into pretty Cotswold villages and towns. From here though, you’ll be particularly primed to see Burford’s medieval bridge, church and antiques shops, or to potter into Shilton village (10 minutes’ walk) to relax by its ford or to visit its friendly pub. The site has a small shop stocked with meats such as pork and beef, plus eggs, bread and locally produced jams and honey, and there are firepits at each roomy pitch where you can cook your dinner. Other facilities on site include hot-water showers.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Very helpful and welcoming campsite owners who helped me find everything I needed locally, which was good as I was on a work trip doing fieldwork and did not have much time for exploring. I liked the simplicity of the site as it was very relaxing, no bright security lights or noise. Low flying planes going overhead have been mentioned in reviews. I am very noise sensitive but didn't find them a nuisance, so most people shouldn't find the planes a problem. There were just a few in the evening.
Facilities basic but very well maintained and efficient. Recommend the site to anyone who doesn't mind simple facilities. A good place to unwind and get away from everything. The propane gas shower was hotter and better than many you find in shower blocks on other campsites and the compost loos were very well built and kept. The owners were so friendly and helpful that I felt very at home which was good as I was travelling and working alone for a week. The pitches are level which is a big plus, and gate locked at night (guests have combination) which felt secure. Also a useful farm shop on site with good ice-cream. Carterton nearby has all the services a visitor might need, shops, cafes, doctors, a good library.

Disliked: The only things that could have made it better would be a tap that was positioned to make it easier to fill a water carrier and some basic shelter over the washing up sink. A more accessible plug socket to charge a phone would have been useful too, though I did manage. Guests need to be fairly self sufficient.

Liked: One of my favourite campsites I've ever camped at. The compostable toilets and showers are clean, Celia (the on-site host) and all the other staff and farmers are friendly and sociable, the on-sight shop has all you really need and the campsite itself is well-kept. Every pitch has a fire pit and bins, and there's plenty of space to allow privacy yet community. Me and my friends were so relaxed and had such a great time sharing and having fun. The neighbouring scenery is breath-taking too. Would recommend all to consider booking this when looking for their next camping trip!

Liked: We had a fantastic stay on the farm with our toddler. The family and site were lovely. It was peaceful and well-organised. We loved having the fire pit and it was an amazing experience for my toddler to wake up and be able to see cows, pigs and other animals on the farm. They had great toys for children too and we were lucky that on the day of our stay they had a pop up bar and bbq with lots of people and families from the village coming to have a drink in the day, it was a lovely atmosphere and we would 100% recommend it to others.

Local attractions

Giraffes, lions and primates are just some of the residents at Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens (five minutes’ drive), where a lively programme of events includes feeding sessions, animal encounters and talks. When the kids are all animal-ed out, take them to the park’s Skymaze adventure playground, with treehouses and jungle bridges. On the upper fringes of the North Wessex Downs National Landscape is the Uffington White Horse (40 minutes), an equine figure carved into the side of a chalky hill in the Bronze Age. Other prehistoric remains in the area include the Iron Age Uffingdon Castle hillfort and several Neolithic burial mounds. Besides its famed universities, Oxford (40 minutes) also has the world-class Ashmolean Museum, which displays collections of western and eastern art, plus antiquities and musical instruments. Take a tour of the Bodleian Library, or book yourself on a relaxing cruise on the River Thames.
