Gravel pitches

  • Peaceful touring pitches with rural views for CAMC members only
  • A 10-minute drive from Retford and 35 minutes from Sherwood Forest
  • Bicycle hire on site; under 10 minutes’ walk from a pub and shop
Nipping to the countryside for a weekend away or a break from work and life duties? Use Willow Beck Retreat Certificated Location (for Caravan and Motorhome Club members only) as your Nottinghamshire bolthole. The touring pitches are on the edge of the village of North Leverton. First and foremost, this translates to excellent views of the countryside. However, it also has the nice touch of being just a five-minute walk from a village shop and under 10 minutes from a traditional local pub down a footpath. Guests can glide off onto the horizon on the back of a bicycle if they wish to, as Willow Beck Retreat Certificated Location has bicycle hire facilities. If you’re not feeling too energetic when it comes around to it, chilling out on the site is made comfy and convenient by a convenient amenities block with gas-powered hot showers, toilets and a hand-washing basin. The pitches also have their own drinking water and grey waste disposal. On a lazy day, weave in a visit to the North Leverton Windmill visitor centre just a five-minute walk away. Built in 1813, the windmill is still going strong and sells flour and other local products. For a spot of shopping or café- and bar-hopping instead, eye up the historical market town of Retford 10 minutes’ drive away.

Liked: Met by the very friendly owner in pouring rain, who gave me a full briefing on all the facilities. We chose pitch 1 and thankfully the sun eventually came out. Level pitches with water and drainage, although a couple of them might require a motor mover as manoeuvring could be a bit tight if all pitces are being used. We used the metered electric hook up and had our caravan heating on low for the duration of our stay; plus we used all the normal power draining facilities; Microwave, Air-Fryer etc, and we used about £4 per day. Pleasant little walk to the windmill and to the local village and a short drive to Sherwood Forest. Nice clean site with a decent shower and 2 WCs.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site (members only)

Liked: Peace and quiet. When you arrive you choose your own pitch and even pitch up A frame forwards if you want. Small compact shower room, very very reasonable electric meter especially when we had the heating on. Lovely little play area our daughter thoroughly enjoyed. Windmill close by was great. Daughter loved it too and we bought some super fresh flour!

Disliked: Coming home!

Liked: This was our first visit to Willowbeck Retreat. It is a lovely quiet peaceful site, very clean and tidy. Toilet facilities were clean and fit for purpose. We saw the owner yesterday morning and he was very friendly welcoming and helpful. We visited the local pub, shop, play park and Leverton Windmill and all were within easy walking distance. The site is great for a quick getaway for a chill and relax listening to the wildlife or just having time for read. We loved it.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site (members only)

Liked: Lovely small site in open countryside but close to road network and lovely villages. Pub and shop in walking distance. Very relaxed and peaceful with plenty of space. Very well maintained. The facilities are small but all you need. Good powerful shower with loads of hot water. We regularly visit our daughter in Gainsborough and this is going to be our new go to location for our motorhome. We were there for 2 nights and enjoyed every moment. Booking through pitch up was quick and easy too. Outstanding little site.

Disliked: Not a dislike but a little pot washing area, nothing too grand would be very helpful to improve the site still further

Local attractions

Whether you were raised on Robin Hood or simply fancy a good woodland stroll, Sherwood Forest (35 minutes’ drive) makes a splendid addition to any day’s plan. The forest has a short trail to the ‘Magic Oak’, a tree with a 10-metre trunk girth and a collection of up to 150,000 acorns when the conditions are optimal. If you’re up for a long-ish cycle, stop by the forest café before taking your wheels onto the Sustrans Route 6 passing by the outskirts of the forest reserve. Travelling with under 10s? Sundown Adventureland (five minutes) has miniature rides and quick entertainment for those still in their primary school years. Alternatively, grab a ‘discovery backpack’ from the café-shop at the Idle Valley Nature Reserve (Notts Wildlife Trust) (15 minutes) and go birdwatching from the boardwalks. Any keen anglers may want to go to Wetlands Lakes (15 minutes) for a day of carp fishing, given they’re armed with the correct licence. Otherwise, if you’re in more of a pottering around type of mood, the National Trust’s Clumber Park (20 minutes) has 3,800 acres of gorgeous parkland including 20 miles of cycling paths, a second-hand bookshop, and an avenue with 1200+ lime trees.
