West End Farm Campsite: Lovely flowers near the pitches

General

  • Small family-run site on an organic cattle farm
  • Adjacent to the River Severn and close to the Severn Way
  • Community-owned village pub within walking distance

Set in a perry pear orchard on an organic cattle farm: that sounds almost poetic. As are the views from the spectacularly scenic little place of West End Farm Campsite, set in the horseshoe bend of the River Severn on the edge of the peaceful Gloucestershire village of Arlingham, and adjacent to the river with easy access to the footpaths of the Severn Way.

A rather smashing pub is within easy walking distance too: the Red Lion freehouse (owned by the village, hurrah) with tiptop locally sourced food, real ale and regular events like quiz nights and folk nights – all just the ticket after a peaceful pedal or serene stroll along the river paths or region's quiet flat roads…?

West End Farm has a toilet block and chemical disposal. Both barbecues and campfires are allowed on site.

Really nice village that the site is based in, lovely and remote and yet only a 20-30 minute drive to local towns if you fancy it. Site is very small but in a really nice way, the kind of “help yourself” approach to a pitch is nice as it means you can just get on with things at your own pace. Really lovely walks around the immediate area too with some nice views of the severn. Very friendly cows too! I think we’d come back again if it were just the two of us especially as we love the Gloucester area, but as parents to be despite it being child friendly enough, there’s not much in the way of activities that we came across for youngsters - though absolutely no fault of the site of course that’s moreso the area being remote and quiet in that sense. Overall really lovely site, clean facilities, no concerns around covid given signage is clear and most people well aware to not get too close to others anyway, would recommend!

    Disliked:

Nothing really, wasn’t an issue for us personally but if you’re a particularly light sleeper then the crows that nest in the trees above the non-electric pitches are quite loud and consistent in their noise making!

Very quiet site within 5 min walk of Severn Way which was signposted from the site. A small field next to the farm surrounded by cows. We were self contained and visited during Covid restrictions so I can’t comment on facilities. As first timers I don’t know what to expect but it was very clean and quiet - perfect for us. Saw the farmer arrive night and morning to check all was well. Access was fine - some lanes but all passable easily. Good directions easy to get to from A38/M5

    Disliked:

Water tap was in one corner of the field so you’d block the drive if you wanted to park anywhere near it to fill up an onboard tank in a camper van or motorhome. There’s not much coming and going though as it’s a small site so probably not an issue. We were first timers so didn’t know what to expect. Take a water carrier with you.

It is a beautiful little campsite with plenty of room. The site has footpaths leading directly to the banks of the river and so made it a really enjoyable experience for us and the dogs.
The facilities are basic but are sufficient for a long weekend.
I would recommend this site to friends and would like to return again in the future.

Small quiet site with level pitches. Now has two toilet/showers though discouraged from using them due to covid. 200 yards from the river. Very reasonable price if you don’t use a EHU.

    Disliked:

No drive over motorhome grey water discharge point. But I guess this is an evolving site and small for such an investment

Local attractions

West End Farm Campsite's local village is Arlingham, also in the River Severn's horseshoe bend and just off Junction 13 of the M5. The area around the village is fab walking and cycling land, of public footpaths, riverside ambles and flat peaceful roads – all set among first-class mid-Wales scenery. (Don't know where to start? Ask at the Red Lion for details of their hare, salmon, cattle and skylark wanders.)

A couple of miles from the farm is the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, running between Sharpness and the old docks of Gloucester. It's a pleasant place to while away a few meandering hours, particularly around Patch Bridge, close to the Wildfowl Reserve at Slimbridge which has the world's biggest collection of captive wildfowl.

Other local options are Berkeley and the Edward Jenner Museum, where the clever chap first figured out vaccination, and Berkeley Castle, where poor old Edward 2 met his grisly end.

Gloucester Cathedral is nine miles from the site; a little further afield are the Norman castle of Goodrich and the Tudor National Trust-managed house of Newark Park.

Must see

  • WWT Slimbridge Wetlands Centre (5.7 kilometres)
  • Berkeley Castle (11.5 kilometres)
  • Gloucester Waterways Museum (14.4 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Westbury Court Garden (3.6 kilometres)
  • Woodchester Park (13.6 kilometres)
