  • Peaceful site in the grounds of a traditional Derbyshire village pub
  • Peak District/Matlock within 25 minutes' drive; Alton Towers an hour
  • Pub-restaurant, takeaway and play area
The Sitwell Arms is a peaceful holiday base with spotless, bang-up-to-date toilets and wet rooms. You’ll find the pub in the quiet village of Morton, on the edge of the Derbyshire Peak District, and it is blessed with a large beer garden that hosts occasional live music in the afternoon, when the outdoor bar and restaurant does lively business. This is a top spot for scenic walkers and explorers. The pub is 20 minutes’ drive from the popular towns of Matlock and Matlock Bath as well as the Peak District, where there are hikes and climbs for all you energetic souls. It’s also less than five minutes’ bike ride to the long-distance National Cycle Route 67, and 20 minutes to pony-trekking adventures in the national park. You might like to start your day with a full English breakfast (available seven days a week) or call in to the pub for a basket meal after 4pm on weekdays, and 12pm at the weekend. When lazy days are an absolute must, chill out in the pub’s large beer garden, and maybe have a bite to eat and a pint of beer. The kids can keep themselves happily occupied at the play area or head inside for a game of pool, dominos or good old-fashioned skittles.

Local attractions

Fan of classic cars? Vintage Adventure Tours (30 minutes' drive), a local outfit with a fleet of ace older autos, can sort you with car tours through the Peak District. For more transport-related nostalgia, home in on the National Tramway Museum (15 minutes), where over 60 vehicles from days gone by have been lovingly restored for guests. When you're not whizzing through the countryside, stop to take a breather at Press Manor Fishing Lakes (15 minutes), a peaceful fishery that can also supply lessons for those yet to try their hand at angling. Alternatively, take a lazy stroll through Matlock (15 minutes) to take in its simple pleasures, or take some time to simply sit and stare at the lovely Lumsdale Falls (15 minutes). Coming with kids? Keep the prospect of a trip to Alton Towers (an hour) up your sleeve to ensure best behaviour throughout your stay. Princelings and princesses may also appreciate a lordly look-around at Bolsover Castle (25 minutes), a Stuart-era mansion. Attractions in the same vein include Chatsworth House (30 minutes) and Haddon Hall (35 minutes).
