Hook Farm Campsite

Lyme Regis, Dorset, England

Tent pitch
Electric grass tent pitch (XL)

Well situated for Lyme Regis, quiet, spacious, clean site.

Jul 2026

Liked Flat pitches (although the site is hilly, the pitches are terraced). 45 min walk into Lyme Regis along pretty river path (you may wish to pre-book taxis if heading into Lyme in the evening). Spotless bathrooms (one at top of site, one at bottom). Ice-pack freezing available, as well as camping essentials (including wine, beer and cider) in the onsite shop. Lovely quiet site at night.

Disliked Nothing (except some noisy campers next to us, nothing the site could help!). Not a dislike, but something to note: the walk into Lyme Regis takes a good 45 mins, perhaps longer if you are walking with young children, or heavy baggage. Just something to bear in mind.

Idyllic small campsite in orchard, quiet, and clean.

May 2026

Liked Due to a booking mix-up, we had to be put on a separate "overflow" pitch to the main orchard, which the owners had mowed especially for us in preparation. The weather was dismal, so they also offered to give us shelter in their barn during the evening, and then offered to let us leave the tent up to air on the day of departure, as it was soaking wet, with collection when dry. Excellent customer service all around, they really do care about people having a great time! Compost toilets amongst cleanest facilities we've used camping, and only a short 10 min Uber ride (or 45 min walk if you prefer) to Clevedon proper, for food and drinks. The site was really quiet at night, and the setting is idyllic.

Disliked Nothing to dislike, we have stayed at Dowlais multiple times now, and always have a friendly and helpful welcome from the owners.

From the manager: Hi Kirsty - thank you for coming back to Dowlais Farm time and time again, we really do appreciate it! We will always do our best to ensure anyone who camps with us has a great time and if we can help at all we will. Sadly sometimes the weather just doesn't play ball does it :( We look forward to welcoming you back to the farm in the sunshine :)

Great for an overnight stop close to M5, great pub food on site

Apr 2026

Liked Lovely double pitch, tons of room, little walk along stream to small wood, close-by pub serving good food, easy drive from Bristol or Gloucester. Very warm welcome from owner. Hands down the most luxurious shower facilities I have encountered in 10 years of camping!

Disliked Some road noise from A38 50m away and M5 a mile away. Very bright lights on campsite, shone into tent and made sleep a little difficult (if you have a black-out tent, you should be fine, though! Children's playground in pub garden may be a little noisy until the pub closes at night.

Excellent site for getting away from it all.

Apr 2026

Liked Huge pitch in the corner of the field, very little road noise (in fact the site was almost silent at night), great woodland walks very close to campsite, and a pub serving cooked breakfasts and lunch only 12 mins walk away. Jess was really helpful and the toilet block was immaculate, very clean. I felt very safe camping on my own for the night. Great site!

Mar 2026

Liked Friendly staff, large cosy pod with great heater, easy walk to Charmouth, easy bus ride to Lyme Regis (bus stop very close to the Holiday Park), fresh linen, great facilities (free swimming pool and sauna), very quiet. Excellent pub (The Royal Oak Charmouth) only 15 mins walk away.

Disliked A better choice of food in the cafe and longer opening hours, so you can breakfast, lunch, and dinner on site if you want to. Would be great if the site also offered camping pitches, to keep the cost down.

Great site, quiet, excellent location, level pitches.

Sept 2025

Liked A quiet site, albeit occasional lowing of cattle (due to it being a working farm). Pitches fairly flat, lots of hedge cover. Easy to reach from main road (the sat nav will deliver you to a bend in the road with no sign of the campsite, but don't panic, just look for the small Browns Farm sign on the side of the road around the bend to guide you the final 20m). Friendly owner. The walk to the nearest pub (Diggers Rest) is a 7-8 min walk along a quiet (but unlit) country road, so if heading out in the darker evenings, take hi-viz and a torch to be on the safe side. The site is well situated for Exmouth; there are several National Trusts not far away (A La Ronde, Killerton etc). Great alternative to staying in a pricey hotel if you are visiting something at Westpoint arena over a weekend.

Disliked There are only two women's toilets and two basins - quite understandable as this is predominantly a caravan/motorhome park rather than catering for tents, but worth bearing in mind. Lovely hot water though!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are pleased that you liked our site. We are happy for guests to use the accessible toilet/hand basin should they find other options occupied.

Skern Adventure - Appledore

Great campsite for those wishing to stay close to Appledore.

Jul 2025

Liked Lots of space, quiet, great estuary/sea views towards the top end of the campsite. Easy walk into Appledore along coastal path (10 mins) - if you aren't keen on heights though, you may prefer to walk along the road instead, as the coastal path follows the cliff edge.

Disliked There used to be a communal freezer from freezing ice-packs, which seems to have been removed. Also, whenever we went over to Reception, it seemed to closed, so we couldn't book activities/the swimming pool.

Beautiful quiet site

May 2025

Liked Believe the hype! This place is an absolute gem. Quiet, peaceful, large pitches in a beautiful orchard, alongside a seldom used road (apart from bicycles as it's part of the national cycling network). The compost toilets are spotless, with lovely smelling foam soap for hand washing. David the owner was very helpful. For those cycling, it's only a 6 min cycle to The Salthouse (for food) or 10 min cycle to town (for shopping).

From the manager: What a fantastic review! Thank you so much, we love how you appreciated the eco friendly hand soap! :) we would be absolutely delighted to welcome you back to Dowlais Farm in the future.

Piccadilly Caravan Park

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

10

High quality site, well thought out pitches and facilities, friendly!

May 2025

Liked Very easy to get to, only a few miles south of Chippenham. Site is very level, so no "hilly" pitches to grapple with (the pitches are also a very generous size). Playground for younger children, two toilet blocks (both spotless) and plenty of showers. Wardens very friendly. Site set off main road, so don't have too much noise at night (people do seem to respect the 'quiet time' rules, very little noise after 10pm, helped by fact that most campers are in motorhomes or caravans, so noise is "contained"). 10-15 min stroll into Lacock where there are multiple pubs for good quality drinks and food. If you like car boot sales, there is one next to the site on Sundays which seems very popular. Lacock Abbey, The Courts and Great Chalfield Manor (all National Trust) are very close by. Great campsite, really recommend.

Friendly site with woodland walks and fab views over the forest.

Feb 2023

Liked Quiet site, well maintained, with pristine toilets and showers. The pod was warm, secure and spacious, with a heater well up to the challenge of keeping out the winter cold. I arrived outside the winter check-in time but the staff were unfailingly kind in making sure I had everything I needed and gave me details of the closest shops and restaurants. I have camped here in the past with family and always found the site friendly and welcoming. Great stay!

Disliked The only thing that I would ask is that a small shop be maintained on site for essentials like milk, bread etc, so you don't have to walk up the hill to the Forest Retreat site.

Aug 2020

Liked Quiet site, no road noise, owners very friendly. Showers basic but clean.

Disliked No facilities (shop or reception) on site, some pitches not level, hard to drive pegs into ground as I think there is a seam of concrete/slate/something underneath some areas (we had pitch #27, maybe we were just unlucky?) Something we weren't expecting were the sea mists which settled over the whole site late afternoon through to mid morning. Meant that although weather was very hot and sunny, we couldn't dry off our towels/swimwear etc (although there is a tumble drier in the toilet block).

Great site, managing social distancing very well

Jul 2020

Liked Believe the reviews! This place is a little gem. The pool was a good size and it was easy to book a 25 min slot for the family. Quiet site after 10pm (important to us), beautiful woodland walks all around, and very friendly helpful staff who go out of their way to help. Cannot fault this place!

Willow Valley Camping Park

Lovely little site, close to Bude and other attractions

May 2019

Liked We had a brilliant double-pitch right by the Reception and communal areas. The owners were really friendly and welcoming. A playground on site was great for the kids to let off steam. We had great food 10 mins walk away through fields/woodland. The campsite was sheltered so we didn't really have any problems with wind, and the pitch was lovely and level (always a bonus!). Even though the A39 is very close (100m away), road noise was minimal. The toilets and shower areas were spotless.

Disliked Such a minor quibble, but the timer on the showers was really short (about 10-15 seconds), so you spent a lot of time re-pressing the button for water.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Kirsty, thanks for the fabulous feedback! We will investigate the shower timers as we thought we had addressed that issue. Looks as though we may need to replace them so thanks for pointing this out.

Gutted - we had been looking forward to coming to this site SO much.

Sept 2017

Liked Well organized site, didn't get chance to try any of the facilities though (see below)

Disliked We arrived 5pm on a Saturday and set up tent in South Rye area, as booked. Winds were light, but I still had quite a job putting the tent up with my husband. Woken at 2am by howling wind and driving rain, decided to pack up and leave, as the children were scared. Left site 4.30am. I understand that the site cannot control the weather, but I think it's irresponsible to have exposed pitches close to a cliff edge. We suffered three broken tent poles, and five neighbouring camping families also left in the early hours of the morning. Please ensure pitches are more sheltered!!! Maybe plant trees as windbreaks or something. I read reviews about strong winds but didn't think it would be so bad. If your tent doesn't have steel tent poles, PLEASE be warned that you may suffer breakages, even from relatively light winds.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. The weather which we have experience during August and into the start of September is not what we expect for this time of year. We are sorry to hear you left early due to the weather, we wish we could control the weather to make everyone's stay more enjoyable.
