General

  • Peaceful Snowdonia site bordered by woodland and a river
  • A 20-minute drive from Capel Curig and half an hour from Conwy
  • Set on a 42-acre sheep farm; campfires allowed and logs sold on site

Hoping for some holidays close to the high Welsh peaks? Tan Aeldroch Farm is a sprawling Welsh sheep farm with green Gwynedd views right across Snowdonia National Park.

This 42-acre site has a wild feel to it, although the grounds are always well maintained (courtesy of the flocks of live-in lawnmowers that you'll be sharing with). Bordered by the river Lledr on one side and woodland on the other, the farm has plenty of secluded spots, trees to climb and rocks to clamber over. Handily, though, it's within a couple of hundred yards of the A470, opening up many options for off-site jaunts (including trips to the sea, about half an hour's drive away).

The farm's eco-conscious owners have been working to restore the natural balance of this part of the valley since 2003 – help them up by making sure that you leave no trace when settling down here. The facilities at Tan Aeldroch Farm are basic, but you can count on flushing loos and a standpipe. Getting chilly in the evening? Make your own heat by setting up a fire in one of the designated firepits (please bring your own wood). To keep things as peaceful as possible, don't use radios or stereos if hanging by at the pitches, ta.

The nearest bar and food shop are in Dolwyddelan, a couple of villages down the main road (five minutes' drive). You can also catch a train here if arriving without a car and book a taxi to the site. The owners are present at the site during weekends, but may not be available midweek.

Love the location...absolutely stunning and peaceful with the surrounding forest and right next to the river!

8min away from Betws-Y-Coed so supplies never far away.

Will definitely be coming back :)

    Disliked:

Some other campers played music despite no music being allowed but they did stop after 10pm.

Showers and washing up area would be nice but wasn't that important.

We arrived and was told to pay that's the best way I can describe that conversation, we put the money in the envelope and was told our change was in the draw, there was 30p in there, no change then. we got to the gate and there was a code, we didn't get given the code just an envelope to pay, walks back up and there's the code on the door.
Gets the field no hardstanding, we booked hardstanding. I was sorting the van when a camper turns up and asks us to pay the owner said we didn't pay ( how awkward and so embarrassing) The place itself is a field, river, stand tap and a toilet perfect just what we wanted.
The owners live in Liverpool so are not there all week we assume they found our money as we never seen them.
The one thing I would point out Is the field can flood from the river as it rises so fast and pours in from the first field, one to watch in the winter as the field itself is very wet second field drains better than the first.
There was some lovely people who stayed, the place itself is what we wanted, a field and some peace without being mithered, some amazing walks on the doorstep.

    Disliked:

We booked a hardstanding pitch when we arrived we quickly realised there are none, however we booked it with the owners, fields very heavy and wet and and flood in from the river, pay with exact money and have it in your hand, we honesty thought it was our liverpudlian accent that made them demand money, my hubby was quite shocked.

From the manager...

Hello sorry you did not enjoy your stay. Just to correct a major part of your difficulty... we do not offer hard standing. It does not appear on the booking you made.
You are also advised to pay in cash on arrival, There's normally change in the honest box.
I hope you will try us again, we have a lovely unspoilt site

Local attractions

Coming here to conquer Snowdon? Pen-Y-Pass car park is about half an hour's drive if you're ascending on foot, while the Llanberis station where you can pick up the Snowdon Mountain Railway is also well within range (35 minutes). Make sure to pack sensible clothing if heading out for a hike – any shorts and t-shirts you've brought along can be put to good use on the beach at Llandudno or Colwyn Bay (both 35 minutes).

Up for a trip on the longest zipline this side of the equator? Then make for Zip World Fforest (10 minutes' drive), where there's also a kilometre-long rollercoaster that twists downhill through the trees. More adrenaline-fuelled action is to be had at Capel Curig (20 minutes), a peaceful mountain village that's home to the Plas-y-Brenin National Outdoor Centre.

Something more sedate? Steer clear of hair-raising Snowdonia activities and instead head for gentler walks at Bodnant Garden (25 minutes) or Conwy Castle (30 minutes).
