Golden hour on site
Lledr valley vistas

  • Peaceful Snowdonia site bordered by woodland and a river
  • A 20-minute drive from Capel Curig and half an hour from Conwy
  • Set on a 42-acre sheep farm; campfires allowed and logs sold on site
Hoping for some holidays close to the high Welsh peaks? Tan Aeldroch Farm is a sprawling Welsh sheep farm with green Gwynedd views right across Snowdonia National Park. This 42-acre site has a wild feel to it, although the grounds are always well maintained (courtesy of the flocks of live-in lawnmowers that you'll be sharing with). Bordered by the river Lledr on one side and woodland on the other, the farm has plenty of secluded spots, trees to climb and rocks to clamber over. Handily, though, it's within a couple of hundred yards of the A470, opening up many options for off-site jaunts (including trips to the sea, about half an hour's drive away). The farm's eco-conscious owners have been working to restore the natural balance of this part of the valley since 2003 – help them up by making sure that you leave no trace when settling down here. The facilities at Tan Aeldroch Farm are basic, but you can count on flushing loos and a standpipe. Getting chilly in the evening? Make your own heat by setting up a fire in one of the designated firepits (please bring your own wood). To keep things as peaceful as possible, don't use radios or stereos if hanging by at the pitches, ta. The nearest bar and food shop are in Dolwyddelan, a couple of villages down the main road (five minutes' drive). You can also catch a train here if arriving without a car and book a taxi to the site. The owners are present at the site during weekends, but may not be available midweek.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Location was great, right by the river. Secure site with padlocked gate. Falling asleep listening to the river was fantastic. Best nights sleep in a tent I've had for a while. Owner seemed lovely on check in.

Disliked Booked for two nights but decided to leave after one due to waterlogged pitch. After a day out hiking and soaked through, coming back and not having dry ground around the tent was not great ( it was incredibly boggy). Access to toilet block a challenge to get to at night.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The backdrop/scenery is very nice. The nature and serenity of the area is pleasant.

Disliked Midges completely ravage the area, especially near the willow tree. You are bound to bitten plenty. There is sheep droppings absolutely everywhere too. On a strong rainy day like when I was there, the combination of the two is extremely unpleasant. Lack of communication from the owners, means you have to figure out the entry code and other things yourself or from the other guests.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Magical location this, camped right by the river. Went mid week so had plenty choice of pitches, no mither at all.
Spent two nights in my camper van with the dog. Close to snowdon walks and 3 miles from betws-y-coed. Lovely walks off the farm grounds too. Highly recommend.
This site is basic, facility wise, but this reflects in the price. Couldn’t fault it.

Local attractions

Coming here to conquer Snowdon? Pen-Y-Pass car park is about half an hour's drive if you're ascending on foot, while the Llanberis station where you can pick up the Snowdon Mountain Railway is also well within range (35 minutes). Make sure to pack sensible clothing if heading out for a hike – any shorts and t-shirts you've brought along can be put to good use on the beach at Llandudno or Colwyn Bay (both 35 minutes). Up for a trip on the longest zipline this side of the equator? Then make for Zip World Fforest (10 minutes' drive), where there's also a kilometre-long rollercoaster that twists downhill through the trees. More adrenaline-fuelled action is to be had at Capel Curig (20 minutes), a peaceful mountain village that's home to the Plas-y-Brenin National Outdoor Centre. Something more sedate? Steer clear of hair-raising Snowdonia activities and instead head for gentler walks at Bodnant Garden (25 minutes) or Conwy Castle (30 minutes).
