  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40
How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd. Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around this part of the world...? If this all sounds a tad too hectic, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended. Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

What customers say

Grand, scenic spot with a chilled vibe and sound staff. Lovely views, loads of room for tents, and handy for walks. Toilets/showers are grand for the most part, though some early comments mentioned issues. Generator or road noise can pop up, and loos might get busy. Great value, proper back-to-basics, go back there.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Easy-to-reach simple, open campsite in a beautiful area, perfectly located across the lane from Torrent Falls walk.

The shower and toilet block was clean, new and with plenty of space, lots of recycling bins around and the washing-up area was only slightly worse than most sites (just one sink).

The real joy of the site is the setting, and proximity to lovely walks. We camped alongside the river, which was lovely, but came with a surprising level of road noise in the background. Not enough to keep you awake but I'd probably choose the other side of the field next time.

Really helpful, friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. Definitely one to return to.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked The location was beautiful. Large pitches and as we were non hook up we could pitch anywhere. The kids loved paddling in the river and playing rounders in the big field.

Disliked Not enough sinks in the toilet area.
The washing up facilities are sadly lacking. Cold water only and only one sink for the whole site.

Liked Love going to Fronalchen. It's quiet, the facilities are well maintained and clean. The owners and staff are friendly and helpful. What more could you ask for, other than more time to be able to go more often. We are looking forward to going back, hopefully soon.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Toilets & showers very good & cleaned on a regular basis. Good sized pitches. Great location.

Disliked A lot of fire pits in use all around the camp site and office selling wood to burn which was a huge concern given the current dry conditions and risk of fire across England and Wales af the moment. We had a government severe alert for fire during our stay but the fires continued after the alert which was very worrying.

No hot water for washing up.

Seems ok mid week. Avoid at weekends as noisy groups seem to arrive.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nice views from the site.

Disliked On our last night we returned from a day out to find our tent completely boxed in by a large group and we were unable to park near our tent as a result. They were then noisy all through the night. No hot water for washing up. Toilets and showers were average.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your final night wasn’t as enjoyable as it should have been.

We’re particularly disappointed to hear that other guests pitched so close to your tent and caused noise throughout the night. We do ask all guests to be considerate of others, both when choosing where to pitch and during quiet hours, and we’re sorry this wasn’t the case during your stay.

We appreciate all feedback as it helps us to improve our guests' experience, and we hope you otherwise enjoyed your time with us.

Liked Very spacious campsite with nice views.

Disliked Only two sinks in the bathroom for such a large campsite. Was a bit noisy at times especially one night as a group decided to have a very loud party but after calling the owner he immediately sorted it out which was great.

Liked Nice location, peaceful. New toilet and shower block, clean.

Disliked Elsan point disgusting (not the campsites fault) due to all sorts of rubbish thrown in there, full bags of rubbish, bottles, plastics due to the fact it’s got a large lid which opens into a large tank. Hold on to your toilet cassette, don’t drop it!!

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on one of the local heritage narrow gauge railways, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base. Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop. Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.
