  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40
How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd. Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around this part of the world...? If this all sounds a tad too hectic, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended. Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

What customers say

A lovely, no-frills site with amazing mountain and river views. Staff are friendly, pitches roomy, facilities clean, especially the showers. Great for walks and exploring. A few found loos could be better & some noise, but mostly quiet. Excellent for a relaxing break.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked It’s a fantastic location

Disliked Very basic amenities. Toilets filthy. Gents toilet had no door so urinals on view. We did not realise a big selling point for the site was hiring out old car wheels and selling logs. We had no sleep for two nights as our motor home was full of wood smoke because people camped close and then lit fires. It would be better if there could be separate areas for people who want fires and those who don’t.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Portable loos were actually fantastic - close by each tent, well cleaned and topped up on toilet roll twice daily.
Nice basic campsite.
Showers were warm - love the portable showers, very clean - only 6 but wasn't much of a wait.
They sell wood on site - £5 CAN PAY CARD
Electric hook up is middle of pitch and outside is non.
There's entrances on the field to get directly to the lake. Good for kids or a morning drink.
20 mins from beach, unlimited hikes and everything you need.
Fires allowed even had pits to borrow.

Disliked Only one sinks so timing is key

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly owners, gorgeous scenery and lovely flat pitches.

Disliked The toilets were dirty, doors didn’t lock and weren’t fit for purpose. It sadly out a real dampener on the trip.

Popped out around 1am & was pleasantly surprised to see such little light pollution. Milkyway clearly visible by eye.

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on one of the local heritage narrow gauge railways, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base. Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop. Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.
