No need to decide between a trip to Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire – just a couple minutes' drive away from the A303, Somerset's Sunnyhill Park and Campsite is an excellent base for exploring all three. This rural site is a five-minute drive from Wincanton, a town with a racecourse, pubs, coffee shops and shops. There are plenty of attractions within a short drive of the site too, whether it's the animals of Longleat, 25 minutes' drive away, or the gorgeous Stourhead Gardens, 10 minutes' drive away. Where else might you visit? Famed Stonehenge and Wells are within 35 minutes' drive of the site. Glastonbury, well known for its annual festival and Glastonbury Tor, is 40 minutes' drive away. Closer by is the gorgeous working estate The Newt in Somerset – at 15 minutes' drive – and Bruton, a small market town – at 25 minutes' drive. It's also just a 25-minute drive from the site to Shaftesbury to see Gold Hill's steep cobbles and a splendid abbey. There are plenty of shops, cafés and pubs dotted around the small local towns and villages. Although, you may want to save yourself for a pint in the pop-up bar on site. In keeping with the rural views stretching towards King Alfred's Tower (note this location down if you're a fan of woodland walks), there are pet sheep, goats, cows, turkeys, chickens, ducks, ponies and cats to meet on site. Covering the practical side of things, the site has an amenities block with two showers and toilets for ladies and the same (two of each) for gents. After dark, guests are very welcome to gather around a firepit.

Liked We stayed for 2 nights on 16th & 17th October 2025.
Small quiet rustic site with nice view of valley & trees in autumnal colours. Gravel hard standing & electric.
Lovely walk through site & fields to Wincanton. Enjoyed good company & great burgers & cider at the on-site Jolly Farmer.
Convenient washing up area.
Ladies wash room & facilities where Sandy had shown nice creativity & given thought to the little things like hooks, mirrors & seats.

Disliked Men’s washroom & showers which felt rather basic in comparison to ladies, particularly flooring, half sized toilet doors offering minimal privacy & no chair. Shower cold & tripped easily. We know Sandy has been trying to sort this issue.

She has been my entire life for the last 7 years and i have reinvested throughout that time constantly striving to improve the site whilst not removing its intimate rural peaceful vibe, and bohemian feel.

we really enjoyed your company and hope the recovery is going well

I hope you wont mind me using my response to your review to high light a few things for future guests x

The shower block has been a massive financial money pit, i have had it all rewired, new showers, new breaker in the new fuse box, new washing up sinks, new drainage, water pump and ibcs for the failing water pressure that burnt out shower after shower (average replacing 8 showers) new flooring in the ladies, and although she is now due her annual revamp i am glad you still enjoyed them in Oct which shows she isnt to bad LOL

As for the mens, they had to be gutted 2020 so the tiled shower cubicles and gully drains were 2021, the stone flooring in the mens 2023, the covered washing up area for all 2024/25, new toilets 2022, hand drier 24, sink '23. New lighting with censors 23. There are hooks on the mens shower doors, but i will also get a couple shower chairs if you feel this is important. There is a shower chair in the ladies. I do not know why the showers would be cold in the mens? and the trip issue is the bain of my life. The shower on the right seems fine but the oe on the left does seem to trip unless its on eco, something that the electrician still doesnt seem able to correct. lets hope the removing of emersions etc helps?....as for the doors they were made by us from 22mm marine ply. the 2 door ways are not conventional sizes
i believe my friend who helps me with maint has said she will add another 6 inches to the bottom of the doors as there has been you and one other reporting this as something they dont like

i have done some bits in the mens this week and put a new video of them on Facebook sunnyhill campsite page, tiktok, instagram and i will pop it on the website too, this should help future guest to see the mens before arrival

Liked Located just outside wincanton, I was initially worried it was going to be noisy being close to the A303 however you turn off the road around 5-10 minute drive and you are greeted with the driveway and what looks like the pub.
I was met quickly by the owner and was offered a choice of hardstanding pitch and the view from the van was just the valley in front of you.

The shower facilities were clean and tidy and a nice well tendered garden outside, all round a lovely location and very quiet other than the cockerel providing the complementary wake up call.. phone signal was also very good making it possible to get some work done, I was staying close for work and would definitely stay again next time I need a stop in the area.

Disliked Wasn't staying longer.

Disliked Leider kann man nicht so ohne weiteres direkt vom Campingplatz wandern gehen.

Site has a rustic charm If you like a regimented site this is not the site for you.
Able to have a fire pit, wood purchased on site.

Route directions

Upon arrival in the hamlet of Riding Gate, turn down the dead-end lane with a property called Tower View on the corner. Down this lane and past the entrance to Sunny Crest bungalow on your right, you will pass the Old Sunnyhill Farmhouse track on your left. Do not turn left until the Cart House and Sundown bungalows. There's a hand-painted sign on the right pointing left down the track at this point. Do not go down the hill. Follow the hand-painted signs down the farm track and to the site.

Local attractions

Devotees of Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books flock to Wincanton (five minutes' drive), not only to peruse the bits and bobs at the Discworld Emporium but also to hunt out the various tributes around the town; having been officially twinned with Ankh-Morpork, there are now several Discworld street names and a themed pub to be seen around the place. Away from the fantasy world, real-life creatures on a drive through Longleat safari park (half an hour). If it’s motors that get you going, take the 10-minute drive to the Haynes Motor Museum instead. Those with a sense for the mystic may like to peruse the famed slabs of Stonehenge (35 minutes) or head to Glastonbury Tor (45 minutes) to consider the legends that surround the ancient site. Less shrouded in mystery but still mighty pretty for a wander are the house and gorgeous gardens at National Trust-owned Stourhead (15 minutes). Wells (35 minutes) is also just up northwest, on the edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, with a splendid cathedral, medieval streets, twice-weekly markets and grand, old The Bishop's Palace & Gardens.
