  • Secluded wild camping on a working farm near Crewkerne, Somerset
  • South Somerset Cycleway 15 minutes' drive; Jurassic Coast 40 minutes
  • Sole occupancy of a woodland glade; firepit, barbecue and shack toilet
So you want to get away from it all for a few days? Here’s your chance. The wild-camping pitch at Manor Farm is hidden away in a peaceful woodland glade near Crewkerne in rural Somerset. No fellow campers, no-one to disturb you. Just the chance to wake up to the singing of birds and the sound of the burbling of the stream nearby, perhaps accompanied by mooing cows in surrounding fields. Accessing the site is easy: there’s dedicated car parking space and a short walk onto the pitch. Once there all is pretty basic: simple facilities stretch to a toilet shack (no shower and no electricity, please note) and a mains water tap. There’s a cleared, chipped space for pitching a tent, plus a massive firepit and barbecue area, so you can boil kettles on the open fire and grill up supper. If you need extra supplies, just follow the footpaths from the farm to the sleepy, mellow-stone village of Merriott (five minutes’ walk) and pick up essentials from the handy store. For a change of scenery, you can stop off at the lively café in a converted chapel or head straight for the local pub.

Liked: On arrival we were met by Nigel and Yvonne, who were most welcoming and Nigel escorted us to the campsite which is a short drive from the farm. The first thing that struck us was that the pictures we had seen on here didn’t do the site justice. The campsite is laid out perfectly, with the campfire was the first area we came to and it’s perfect for cooking and relaxing by the fire. Next was the pitch site, plenty big enough for our large tent, flat with wood chips and a nice view other the site. And but not least the toilet, nice and clean with plenty of spare rolls. If your looking for somewhere to get away from the hustle and bustle of life then look no further, being the only one on site is a god send and your not overlooked by anyone and virtually no road noise just peace and quiet. And yes there is no shower, but that is easily overcome with a bucket of water and some soap (it’s like wild camping with a toilet and fire pit) You do have to drive across a field to get to the campsite, we had a Toyota Verso and it was no problem at all. We were so impressed we are coming back, and would have no problem at all recommending this campsite to anyone.

Disliked: None and we mean that.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely everything. Heaven on earth. Complete seclusion and privacy. Excellent facilities. Loads of different areas to pitch tents - all flat. The campfire fire pit was huge! But had a swinging griddle to cook on which was so convenient. Loads of wood brought to the site by the owners. Spotless flushing toilet despite being in the middle of a wood! The shelter is big enough to shelter from the elements and still be outdoors cooking on the fire. Huge area for sunbathing/sitting chilling. And the hammock is bliss! So much wildlife - I had butterflies landing on me! It really is the most tranquil place on earth and by far the best site I’ve ever stayed at! The hosts were lovely and welcoming and respectful of privacy too.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Everything! The only bad thing is we had to leave as only had a few days away. It’s a little bit of paradise tucked away in your own private glade. Wood chip high area for the tent was perfect. The open fire even had a grill and kettle hook. The shelter and log stumps for tables were perfect. The fact it had a flushing toilets a massive bonus. There’s a tap next to it for water. Although no shower it really didn’t matter to us. The hammock is lovely and comfy and you can look straight up into the tree canopy. Was very easy to boil some water to wash and I even had a hair wash under the tap and a bucket shower with warm water to finish off. If you’re looking for posh facilities and parking right next to your tent and the usual crammed in like soldier feeling don’t go here. If you’re looking for peace and quiet and are happy to get back to basics a bit with the massive added bonus of a flushing toilet this is the place. We’ve found our new yearly pitch now. Lovely welcoming people and really admire what they’ve done.

Disliked: We had to leave 🤣.

Liked: Everything! Perfect pitch, we loved it here. The shelter and firepit with log seats/tables is a really good setup. Solar lights plus by the toilet useful. Loved the hammock also. We just chilled in the glade by the fire after cooking some nice food listening to the birds. Yvonne and Nigel were very helpful and welcoming. Thankyou we will return!!

Local attractions

Use Manor Farm as a base for walking stretches of the River Parrett Trail, or stop off at Ham Hill Country Park (both 10 minutes) and have a potter around its sprawling Iron Age hill fort. Cycle trails cross southern Somerset’s Mendip and Blackdown hills, and the challenges of the South Somerset Cycleway (15 minutes) are easily accessed too. Sea air a number-one priority? Head to Lyme Regis Fossil Beach (40 minutes) or Charmouth (35 minutes) on the Jurassic Coast to go hunting for ammonites, or choose Seaton (45 minutes) for its long shingle expanse, promenade walks and traditional seaside attractions like fish and chip shops or ice-cream kiosks. There are plenty of stately homes to poke around too; the lovingly restored Tudor-era National Trust-owned Barrington Court (15 minutes) also has lovely grounds with walled gardens and orchard walks. Lytes Cary Manor is another National Trust property, this one with paths leading through exotic topiary hedges and lavender gardens. Anyone with a love of military history can tour the Fleet Air Arm Museum (both 20 minutes) with its huge collection of aircraft.
