  • Family-run park in the village of Wool, five miles from the coast
  • Under two miles from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
  • Five minutes' walk from train station, bus stops, pubs and shops
If you’re picking holiday reads to bring to Whitemead Caravan Park in Wool, Dorset, there’s one blindingly obvious contender: step forward local lad Mr Thomas Hardy. Reread your old copy of Tess of the D’Urbervilles down here and you may just spot a few similarities between a couple of local buildings and certain locations in the novel. Even if literary references aren’t your thing, there are many reasons to plant yourselves at this family-run park in the Dorset village of Wool. Chief among these may well be its easy access to a plethora of transport options: make life easy by leaving your car or caravan on site and toddling a few minutes to the train station or bus stops for your days out. Alternatively, get legs going on the network of local walking and bike paths – heaps of fab attractions are within easy reach on foot or two wheels. Upon your return to the village, reward your efforts with a feed of fish and chips or a restorative pint of local ale at one of the two pubs within staggering distance. Also within a few minutes’ walk are a butcher and a baker (sadly no candlestick maker) where you can pick up fresh food for the evening barbie. Less poetic but no less convenient are the village’s two supermarkets, and the park’s own mini market, full of handy essentials. If you didn’t quite manage to tire your kids out during the day, send them over to the playground, or wander over to the games room for a few rounds of pool, darts or table football. Wifi is available if they need a little bit of quiet time alone to play with gadgetry. The park stretches over five acres so you can always find a shaded spot to settle down with a glass of wine and a Hardy novel (other authors’ works are also permitted..).

Electric grass pitch (XL)

Liked: Good sized grass pitch, clean and tidy facilities. Convenience shop for essentials. Very friendly staff that were willing to go over and above to help.

Disliked: The games room closed at 8pm which we felt was a little too early considering quiet time was from 10pm.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review and your comments, Peter. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Kind regards

PS. Unfortunately, our normal staff roster do not allow for the games room to be left open after 8pm.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: On arrival we were met by a very polite & friendly man, who showed us to our pitch, and gave us all the information needed for our stay, including where to eat out (The Ship Inn offers 10% off to visitors to the campsite).
The grass on the pitch was neatly cut, and the ground was completely flat. The whole site was neat and tidy, and the shower/toilet/washing up block was very clean.
The lady in reception was very helpful with regards to public transport. The local bus service, which runs from the railway station just around the corner, is great, going to all the attractions in the area.
There is a regular train service, which runs alongside the site, but it doesn't really disturb the peace and quiet too much (not too early in the morning, or late at night).
The area around Wool is nice for walking in, with the River Frome just in behind the site. There is also a local connection to Tess of the d'Urbervilles, for all you Thomas Hardy fans.
Highly recommend a stay at this site.

Electric grass pitch (XL)

Liked: We asked to be as close to the play park as possible and was put bang next to it, made our stay much more enjoyable to be able to watch the kids sat from our tent. The toilet and shower facilities were immaculate and the staff were all super friendly, made us feel very welcome.

Disliked: Charging 50p for each ice pack to freeze, we have a big cooler box and loads of ice packs so for us this made it a dear do, over the week. But it wouldn’t put us off coming again, now thinking we need to purchase an electric cooler :)

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: The staff were friendly and the site was well maintained and clean. Showers and toilets were spotlessly clean. Site was very quiet.

Disliked: WiFi was extra charge as was use of hairdryer

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you very much for your review and comments. We're glad that you enjoyed your stay but am sorry to hear that you found the extra charges for WiFi and the use of our hairdryers, not to your liking.

We charge for WiFi in order to provide our guests with a stable and efficient connection by preventing overloading of the network. Our packages are very reasonable and start from as little as £2.50, depending on our guests' individual needs. Although we charge a small fee of 50p to cover the cost of electricity whilst drying your hair, the hairdryers in both the mens' and ladies' shower blocks are provided free of charge.

We thank you for staying with us hope you will reconsider visiting us again.

Electric hardstanding pitch

Liked: We stay as grandparents with 2 grandchildren.
We were met at the gate with a warm friendly welcome and escorted to our pitch where all the site facilities were pointed out and explained.
Showers and toilet block was modern and clean 🙂.
Small shop on site but had all the essentials and more.
Small play park but kept our grandchildren entertained (ages 5 and 7).
We will definitely be returning to this site.

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike about this site.

Local attractions

On the edge of the Isle of Purbeck and halfway between Bournemouth and Dorchester, Wool is handily placed for reaching some excellent attractions. Closest to the park are Monkey World and the Tank Museum in Bovington, both within a five-minute drive, 10-minute cycle or half-hour walk. If you’d like to play at being a knight, 15 minutes’ drive brings you to Corfe Castle, a medieval ruin with nooks and crannies for hiding out. Five miles south are the sea and the Jurassic Coast’s most famed attractions – Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Other options for days out include cycling around Wareham Forest followed by boating on the River Frome from Wareham (10 minutes’ drive), or a trip on the Swanage Railway half an hour away, or – well, it’s safe to say you won’t get bored...
