Scenic countryside setting

  • Family-run park on a former stud farm and in a wildlife haven
  • Two and a half miles from the coast
  • Heated outdoor pool, bar, café, shop, takeaway and craft centre
Dithering re which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation – walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park. On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy. Nature fans will champ at the bit to delve into the 40 acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others. Meanwhile, beach buoys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch. On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas, walking trails, and nature all around; the park has won awards for its approach to wildlife management and conservation. Also around are letterboxing opps, a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar. Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

What customers say

A grand spot, well looked after, with plenty of room. Staff are dead sound. Grand for getting about. Some bit of bother with the Wi-Fi, auld noise, and not all the pitches are flat, mind you.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Good location for seeing Torquay and Paignton.

Disliked Unable to contact staff to escalate inconsiderate and rude behaviour by other guests. Both in hours and out of hours contact number used many times as advised on line but no reply. I wasn’t the only person with this issue either, as I spoke to others who were upset about anti social behaviour concerns they had struggled to report. Pitches cramped and felt on top of each other.

Disliked Food wasn't greatest, but only tried one thing so can't really compare.

Woodland camping pod

Liked The site was busy (being the summer holidays) but it didn't feel over subscribed and there was plenty enough room and facilities for everyone. Kids loved the pool, indoor pool disco and the play area.

Toilets were clean and showers were nice and warm.

Liked All staff were very friendly, campsite is very dog friendly also. Pitches are a good size.
A good location to go all over, and supermarkets all close by.
Food was great and large amounts.
Showers were lovely and warm and never lost pressure, always clean.
Shop well stocked for what you may need.

Disliked Not all toilets had a sink and found that a little strange.

Local attractions

The sights and activities around this part of Devon will suit all tastes: Dartmoor for active adventures, Totnes and Dartmouth for history and heritage – and the 22 miles of the English Rivieria for beaches, watersports, fishing and boat trips. The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is Goodrington, a mile south of Paignton. After you’ve stretched out on the red sands, there are a few other options to check out: learn about the history of the English Riviera at the free Seashore Centre, pedal your way around the boating lake, or take the kids to the waterslides and pools of Splashdown at Quaywest. The English Riviera is of course also Agatha Christie territory – Greenway House was her holiday home (also where David Suchet as Poirot filmed his last scenes. Sniff.) If you can’t make it to the annual Agatha Christie festival (tsk), amble along the 10 landmarks of the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay; eight of the sites have clues spelling out the name of a Christie character. Hint: it’s probably not ‘Miss Marple’.
