Trees on site

General

  • Quiet and rural park in the middle of a two-acre woodland
  • A 20-minute drive from Canterbury and 25 minutes from Margate
  • Barbecues, campfires and dogs allowed; walks straight from the site

Wander the waterways and woodlands of England’s south east from Puddledock Woods Camping, a peaceful wild camping site in two acres of woodland, behind a smallholding and workshop in lush countryside 20 minutes’ drive from Canterbury.

Public walks aplenty are around this no-frills site, whether you’d rather amble on pathways through the surrounding trees or towards a particular destination like a Georgian-era inn a 20-minute walk away with its gorgeous setting on the River Stour. The square mile of reed beds, fens, ditches and wet grassland at Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve is also reachable within 20 minutes on foot (or a five-minute drive) for yet more rambling, and the coast is a 15-minute drive away.

Whatever you opt for, dogs are welcome to join you at Puddledock Woods; barbecues and small campfires are permitted as well if you’re planning on appeasing the appetite alfresco. The site has no electricity or night-time lighting, and showers aren’t provided but a water tap and composting toilet are set in the woods.

As cars have their own special area slightly away from the site to keep the place as peaceful as possible, the staff at Puddledock Woods Camping can help transport your gear by quad and trailer from the parking area (just ask for help in advance, using the details in your booking confirmation email).

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site was wonderful, bit muddy after a week off rain but Matt was superb in helping get the tent and kit to the pitch in his jeep. The trees are evenly spaced with plenty of space for tents. Even our 6 man family tent easily fitted. Exposed roots aren’t a problem either as can be the case with a wooded site. Toilets were clean and well stocked. The owners dogs are friendly and our daughter loved meeting them.

Basic site but with everything I needed.

Lovely secluded pitches in the trees and plenty of options for hanging my hammock.

Arrived on a rather stormy night and friendly host was very helpful offering me the use of one of the bell tents if my set up didn't last the night.

Thankfully my tarp held and I had a great nights sleep with only the soothing sounds of wind, rain and the odd wild animal.

    Disliked:

Someone else in the revives had mentioned the hosts dogs being loose around the washing up area.

They are very well behaved but like most dogs they will bark and approach you when you if you enter their territory.

For those unfamiliar with dogs this could be frightening although this didn't bother me.

Great place to stay, the family that own the site were very welcoming and accommodating.

The site it’s self was lovely and was just what we were looking for, toilets were kept clean as were the grounds.

The owner took our camping stuff in his 4x4 to our pitch as you have to park in a designated area but it isn’t too far away and the walk through gives you the chance to take in the lovely surroundings.

The campsite was fantastic - just what we were hoping for with camping amongst the trees. Fire pits were a very welcome addition as well. We were the only people staying there during our visit so had the forrest to ourselves.

The hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful and we're certainly hoping to return again.

Lovely walks out in the nearby fields, a couple of nice pubs and canoeing not too far away as well.

    Fantastic!

Really enjoyable stay. The manager, Matt and his son were really helpful and made us feel very welcome. This is the perfect place for campers who like to try a bit of bush craft as well - the trees are perfect to rig up a hammock! Many thanks to all at Puddledock Woods and look forward to our next visit.

The owners of the property are incredibly welcoming and very helpful in getting your camping stuff over to the pitches. They have 3 absolutely stunning big dogs whom all love a fuss each time you pass the house. The actual site where we where camping was picture perfect!! Gorgeous!! So quiet, really nice sized pitch with free use of a fire pit and picnic bench each, what I absolutely loved was the fact you can collect your own firewood from around the woods for free!! Its Really clean & well kept, it has multiple toilets around and the use of a dish wash station. If you love to get right into nature and love the woods then this is the place to go!! It is GORGEOUS!! I camp alot but this is by far the one I'm going back to again and again!!

To give this campsite a 5 star rating would be an understatement! It is AMAZING! What a beautiful setting – the wild woodland pitches feel a world away from the usual busy field type campsites around the UK. Cannot recommend the location and setup enough. The amount of other campers was perfect, it felt still very private and all the other groups we spoke to said they couldn’t even hear us and we didn’t hear them either! The forest acoustics seem to be really beneficial for this. Matt and his family were so helpful and friendly throughout the whole stay. It’s SUCH a nice touch to have all your camping gear and bags taken up in the jeep so you can stroll through the forest with ease. Impeccable service, ideal facilities and a true home away from home. (Loved meeting all the pets as well!)

Enjoyed this place so much, We stayed an extra night.

Matt and family were really great. Had a fantastic time. Pub was less than a mile away and a lovely walk. Plenty of fruit to pick on the way back. We made a fruit compote on the fire and it was delicious with some rice pudding (bought from the shop).
There is a flushing loo or a few compost loo's dotted around.
A Washing up sink, ice if needed and for a small fee, logs for the fire. Fire pits supplied. We enjoyed collecting fire wood, as plenty around the woods to start the fire going.

There was enough space between us and others, although not many others, which was nice.

Plenty of tree's, if a hammock is your thing.

It was peaceful, relaxing. We even saw bats in the evening just before it went pitch black.

    Friendly people.

Do as much or as little as you like, you're sure to have a great time, we really enjoyed getting back to nature.

Local attractions

As well as being pretty, the area around the site is dotted with towns and cities worth perusing – from historic Canterbury to coastal Margate. Try the former to punt down the Stour, roam the Roman walls and take Chaucer-themed tours towards the cathedral; the latter, meanwhile, is home to a sandy beach, the seafront Turner Contemporary gallery and a vintage fairground (25 minutes’ drive away).

Even closer than Margate is Herne Bay (15 minutes): head here for salty walks beside the Reculver Towers and Roman Fort on Herne Bay, an old Anglo-Saxon monastery that nods to the region’s history as a dock for ships in the Roman era. Or follow the coast around to Botany Bay (half an hour from Puddledock Woods Camping) to hunt for fossils below the chalk-white cliffs.

For very famed white cliffs, Dover (and its ferry ports for France) is a 40-minute drive, while Whitstable and its oysters are 25 minutes away in the other direction.

If the kids are needing some solid entertainment, the creatures at Howletts Wild Animal Park and Wingham Wildlife Park are 20 and 15 minutes’ drive away respectively.

Must see

  • Howletts Wild Animal Park (4.7 miles)
  • St Augustine's Abbey (5.9 miles)
  • Canterbury Cathedral (6.0 miles)

  • The White Cliffs of Dover (14.9 miles)
