  • Family-owned wild camping site eight miles from Newcastle upon Tyne
  • A 10-minute drive from Metrocentre; 30 minutes from Derwent Reservoir
  • Barbecues and dogs permitted; small woodland area; pubs nearby
Whether it’s tracing Hadrian’s Wall, clip and climbing at a local entertainment complex or windsurfing and open-water swimming around a reservoir, you’ll be able to pack together a pretty dandy break from Stampley Moss Farm. Eight miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, the city lights are just 20 minutes’ drive away, but water-based relaxation is also within reach, whether at the coast (35 minutes’ drive) or Derwent Reservoir (half an hour). Four-legged friends are welcome on a lead here and they’ll have a small private forest to stretch their legs. The woodlands circle the pop-up pitches, which are kept in a fully wild paddock (not a professional campsite) with no electricity and no facilities other than a portable toilet and cold tap. You're welcome to get a toasty vibe going with a barbecue. There’s also a pile of chopped firewood in the forest to help yourself to if you'd like to make a firepit (just be careful with the fire). Keep a lookout for the very nosy peacocks on site, who love sultanas and seeds. The family-owned farm is friendly, that’s for sure, so once you’re all settled in, you’ll be ready to brace for take-off. Those of you who are after a foodie plunge first will find pubs and restaurants within five minutes’ drive of the site. And when you’re ready to march off into the horizon in search of wildlife, there are red kite zones locally or the river Derwent’s under half an hour’s walk away. With Gateshead’s Metrocentre 10 minutes’ drive away too, you’ll really be in a prime spot for a shop-till-you-drop afternoon or perhaps a clip and climb, cinema or miniature golf showdown. Take note that the security gate is locked at 10pm, so it's not possible to enter or exit after this time. If there's space left over, you are welcome to park your car on your pitch.

What customers say

A grand spot for a bit of wild camping, with a lovely chilled, back-to-basics feel and campfires a go. Grand pitches and handy to the shops. The portaloo gets a mixed reception, some find it a bit grim, others say it’s grand for what it is. Security gates and the hosts are a good shout.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Was lovely and quiet and just what was needed, very basic but that's what we wanted, somewhere to pitch a tent have a fire, and for the price was great will definitely be back, already planning to return with friends and family after recommending the farm to them.

Disliked The only one thing I'd say is that fire's are allowed but the preference of a firepit is preferred due to destroying the grass, which is fine and understandable, as I'm assuming the field is also used for horses, they were remains of fires around the field I used a fire pit, but still managed to scorch the grass even when trying to be mindful not to leave any damage, hopefully the option of having a fire isn't taken away, also maybe an option of an area to dispose of the ashes, maybe a few slabs people could grab to put the pit on and return would help in keeping the grass and ground in better condition for your horses

From the manager: Thank you very much for the lovely review . Unfortunately you’re right we are seriously considering not continuing next year due to particularly this weekend majority not using their fire pits & in full view burning the ground which isn’t acceptable on any land.
It’s a real shame and prohibited costs of the toilet and commercial bin every few days means with repairs to the land will be not viable sadly

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Really lovely, pretty wild site with a nice woodland for firewood and some pretty walks around. It was pretty quiet when I was there with my two little kids. There's a riding arena that you can see from the site which provided good entertainment for my kids too!

Disliked The portaloo was pretty grim, but was clearly advertised as being just a portaloo, so I wasn't expecting anything less, but I was a little disappointed in the maintenance of it considering it was the only facility provided.

From the manager: Thank you for your review
Unfortunately the portaloo may make it no longer viable to continue the pop up field it is serviced professionally every 5 days which costs the equivalent of 3 bookings . (Combined with the bin fees exactly the same) and I have no control over it. For example the week you stayed it was serviced on Thursday by Friday someone had broken the privacy flap & shredded loo roll all over the floor and outside. The request for service takes 48hrs so unfortunately other than close the wild camping pop up field there’s nothing further we can do . I’m sure you’d appreciate that if we had a septic waste vehicle we most certainly would . I think we may have not to open next year it will no longer be viable if we get two at £17 per tent

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Loved the relaxing site, it is as near to wild camping without hiking to find a nice spot away from it all with the added security of an electric gate.

Disliked Campers making fires on the ground and not leaving the site as they find it , although the site wasn't littered there were signs of disrespectful campers remains which unfortunately is everywhere you camp nowadays

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi
Thank you for your booking
Yes unfortunately some people are very disrespectful making fires on the bare ground . They are meant to be using their own fire pit. As you say it is not littered as I do clean each day so thank you for noticing but unfortunately some still can’t put away after themselves.

Liked The price was great. Being able to use fire pits was good. Free use of water was ideal. Location was close to our home and will definitely use again

Disliked Only one portaloo which was a little smelly

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you very much for the booking and lovely review . The portaloo is professionally serviced every 5 days and due to costs wouldn’t be worth providing the pop up camping field if we had another we would love to!

Would recommend for wild camping, only facility is one portaloo.

Local attractions

What was life like in past times around here? Well, for a whizz back to the Roman era, Heddon-on-the-Wall (15 minutes’ drive) and Corbridge Roman Town (25 minutes) are both a short drive away, where you’ll get to see excavation collections, Roman armour and trinkets, as well as the remains of a 73-mile Roman wall. The 1820s to the 1950s are in focus at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (20 minutes). This place is an open-air museum, so you’ll get to dive in headfirst with croquet and den building activities here or just have a look around. There are old colliery railway tracks for walking and cycling at Chopwell Woodland Park (10 minutes) but Go Ape Matfen takes things to the treetops (25 minutes) for more daring obstacle courses and zipwires. Water’s surely got to feature in your break too, as the coast is just over half an hour’s drive away. At Seaham Beach (35 minutes), perhaps you’ll want to search for sea glass or pull out all the stops for a picnic on the shore, followed by a pretty promenade walk. Derwent Reservoir (half an hour) is another place all about the water, whether it’s fishing lessons, open-water swimming, sailing or windsurfing.
