General

  • Quiet adults-only forest site with stables for bringing horses
  • A 20-minute drive from Bury St Edmunds and an hour from the coast
  • Next door to forest, West Stow Country Park and Anglo-Saxon village

Don’t leave the horse behind when you take a holiday: quarter your steed alongside your good self in the Suffolk countryside at King’s Forest Caravan Park.

A couple of minutes’ drive from the village of West Stow, this peaceful adults-only site is next to Kings Forest and West Stow Country Park, where trails for walkers, bikers and horse riders wind through an ancient landscape of heath and lakes alongside the River Lark.

Part of a working farm and equestrian centre, Kings Forest Caravan Park has stable facilities for visiting horses, and there’s coaching in dressage and equine behaviour if you and four-hoofed friend need a refresher course. The adjacent forest and the surrounding Suffolk countryside make cracking turf for hacking across too. They’re just as good for walking and pedalling, and with direct access to the forest, woodland wanderings and wildlife encounters are close to hand; look out for fallow deer, wild foxgloves and kestrels swooping overhead.

The peace and quiet are highly prized out here, and the proprietors ask everyone to kindly keep it down after 10pm… the horses need their beauty sleep…

Location by the forest with lots of varied walks all around. Also liked the Anglo Saxon village across the road. When we were there in October there was good spacing between pitches on a good flat, dry field.

    Disliked:

The toilet and shower block is very basic. For example there are only 3 toilets in total and no sink in any of them. This means that having gone to the toilet you then have to go out and round the corner to the mens/womens shower area to wash your hands - and there are only 2 sinks in each area. Not great during Covid times. The floor and walls could be cleaner. Also, while at most times of the year there is probably no need for heating, it would be good to have at least a towel rail in the shower area. There are no controls on the showers, so you have to step in and accept the heat, power and direction of flow that you get. Very basic decor and again, could be cleaner with improved lighting. There was no information displayed anywhere on the campsite and the owner referred us to the website, which is a bit poor. On the website it says there is wifi, but as there was no reception and no information board, we never found out the code. Quite disappointing.

Lovely area, really easy to gain access to the forest and had a nice visit to the Anglo Saxon village over the road. Very peaceful and pleasant and the facilities were fantastic, everything we needed! It was our first time going away in our campervan and Leigh very kindly helped us to sort out our electricity after we had problems. We felt very welcomed and looked after and would love to come back again another day. Thank you very much!

Local attractions

A walk away, West Stow Country Park is a top spot for Suffolk strolls and rides, with a pair of hides for birdwatching and whole platoons of wildlife gathering on the lake and along the River Lark. As an added bonus, there’s a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village where you can see how life was way back in the Dark Ages.

The ancient market town of Bury St Edmunds is 20 minutes’ drive away if you’re minded to continue the historical theme: medieval Moyse’s Hall is home to a fab museum, while Ickworth House, built in neoclassical style for the earls of Bristol, is like a little bit of Rome on the Fens. After that, head on to the half-timbered, brightly hued cottages of Lavenham or have a go at axe making at Grime’s Graves prehistoric flint mine; both are half an hour away.

There’s wildlife aplenty around here too, and trails to spot it at Cavenham Heath National Nature Reserve (15 minutes): blue tits and woodpeckers are often seen in the woods, while on the heath, lizards, adders and stone curlews flit around the remains of World War II defences.

More exotic residents can be met at Banham Zoo (40 minutes), from Bactrian camels to silvery marmosets and gelada baboons, and seals can sometimes be spotted from the cliffs and beach at Felixstowe, an hour away. Even without glimpses of its whiskered marine mammals, the seaside town makes a top day trip, with beach walks, harbour cruises and tours of 18th-century Landguard Fort finished off with fish and chips.
